Sentara committed $19,866,00 to teach and train healthcare professionals:
By 2016 there is a predicted shortage of nearly 200 primary care providers and 42 specialists within the Hampton Roads market. Additionally, by 2016, 25% of the currently practicing physicians in Hampton Roads will reach the age of 65.
Sentara considers it vitally important to help prepare and train local health professionals to maintain a pool of highly skilled medical professionals in Hampton Roads.
Sentara invested $4,430,000 in community health and prevention screenings:

Community Health and Prevention facilitated more than 1866 screening events for 39,039 people at churches, large employers, community health centers and other locations in Hampton Roads.

More than 16,000 people participated in Sentara's cancer education, support and screening activities in 2012 in Hampton Roads.
