Ways To Give

Cancer is a life-changing experience — for patients and their families and caregivers. Over the long term, one of the most important services we offer are the support groups which help patients and families deal with the effects of the disease, during and after their course of treatment. Here is why it matters so much…

Leon Sirois, member of the Man to Man Prostate Support Group at Sentara CarePlex Hospital, prostate cancer survivor.

Thanks to early screening and treatment, Leon Sirois is now cancer free. Still struggling with side effects from the treatments, he looks forward to updates and fellowship at the monthly “Man to Man Prostate Cancer Survivor” meetings.

The group’s members also help spread the word about the importance of screening since the statistics are shocking: one in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and some experts predict that every man will get the disease if he lives long enough.

More than 23,000 people participated in cancer related screenings and educational events systemwide at Sentara in 2007. Increasing this number, particularly in high risk groups, is a major objective of our education and outreach programs.

"I was pretty much in shock when I was diagnosed with Stage II prostate cancer in 2006. I had so many questions and fears that I needed to talk about. I found I was most comfortable talking to other patients who were on the same journey I was."

Connie Bush, Community Health Educator, reports that: “We are proud that screenings are one of the many services provided by the Cancer Mission funds to help patients in financial need with medicines, special supplies or equipment, and transportation. We can only do this with the community’s support, for which we’re very grateful.”
