Sentara Foundation Annual Report 2010

Donations to the Cancer Mission Fund can go to fund support groups such as the Man to Man Prostate Cancer Support Group. Patients who participate in these support groups, such as Leon Sirois (left), not only learn more about their health, but can take the time to share their experiences with others going through similar hardships. “I found I was most comfortable talking to other patients who were on the same journey I was,” says Sirois. For more information on cancer support groups, please visit the Sentara Cancer Network.

The Lyder Family (right) donated to the Maternal Infant Care Coordination (MICC) Program—a part of Sentara Home Care Services—in lieu of Christmas presents in 2008. This program provides at-risk mothers with important prenatal care that they would not normally receive. Generous donations by people such as the Lyders go towards providing nutritional supplements, car seats, and baby care classes that will provide so many children of at-risk families with a better life. To learn more about the MICC program, please visit Sentara Home Care Services.

Patricia Jackson (left) was saying goodbye to friends at a cookout, when suddenly she was struck with a piercing headache and soon fell unconscious. Mrs. Jackson had suffered a hemorrhagic stroke, specifically a brain aneurysm, and emergency surgery was needed—fast. Sentara Nightingale came to the rescue, airlifting Mrs. Jackson from Albemarle Hospital to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, certified as a Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission. That flight saved Mrs. Jackson’s life. Because Nightingale is such a vital resource for the community and is currently in its 27th year of service, planning is under way to replace it with a newer, state-of-the-art helicopter in 2011. Donations to Sentara Nightingale will help save millions of lives in the Hampton Roads region. To learn more about Nightingale, please visit Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance.

Few things in life are more difficult than when a child loses a parent, close friend, or relative. Donations to Camp Lighthouse go to support a camp for children ages 6 to 16 who have experienced the death of a family member or close loved one. Over 50 volunteers run a two-day camp that provides children’s grief counseling sessions balanced by fun activities. Much of the cost of running this important camp depends on donations from generous individuals, corporations and community organizations. For more information on Camp Lighthouse, please visit Sentara Home Care Services.
