Ways to Define Quality: Patient Satisfaction
When it comes to measuring quality, high marks for patient satisfaction are among the most important considerations. Although the recommendations of neighbors and friends are helpful, they may reflect too heavily on an individual experience during one stay.
A more accurate measure of patient satisfaction is survey information. Data reflecting the experiences of many people over time is more likely to be an accurate prediction of what your experience will be like with a physician or a particular facility.
At Sentara, assessing patient satisfaction is paramount to what we do. We conduct regular surveys of our patients to help assess our strengths and to identify areas in need of improvement.
In addition to our survey efforts, we get feedback from surveys conducted by independent consultants.
For example, for 12 straight years, the National Research Corporation has named Sentara Norfolk General Hospital the Consumer Choice Award winner for Hampton Roads. More than 200,000 households nationally and about 1,100 in the Hampton Roads area rated hospitals on four attributes: best doctors, best nurses, image and reputation, and best overall quality. Residents in 15 cities and counties, from Gloucester to Currituck counties, favorably rated Sentara Norfolk General Hospital’s medical staff, image and overall quality.
