Message from Sentara's CEO

A hospital ICU (intensive care unit) provides nursing and medical care for critically ill patients with the use of sophisticated monitoring and resuscitative equipment.

What You Need to Know
When researching ICU care a hospital provides, look for measures like ventilator-associated pneumonia and central line infections. Why does Sentara monitor measures like these?
The lower the rate, the better.
 Know the facts about:
    Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (PDF, 117 KB)
Central Line Infections (PDF, 125 KB)
Measures are shown below in two separate charts for teaching and community hospitals.

To see ICU Care / Infection measures for other hospitals in Virginia, you can visit the Virginia Department of Health Web site.

Quality Healthcare is Safe and Effective
Healthcare measures help hospitals determine whether services are being provided in the most safe and effective way possible. Monitoring these measures help hospitals evaluate and improve the way care is delivered. At Sentara, we emphasize areas where experts agree on the best treatment for specific conditions.
