On January 13, 2011, the Physician Education Department was approved for a six-year accreditation with commendation term by the Medical Society of Virginia (MSV) Intrastate Accreditation Committee (IAC). The MSV Site surveyors reviewed files from 2007-2010, interviewed the members of Physician Education and the CME Committee on November 11, 2010. Their results included the following:
“The Medical Society of Virginia Intrastate Accreditation Committee commends Sentara Healthcare for integration of the CME program with a system to support physician learning, performance change, and improvements in healthcare. The deep commitment and extensive efforts to achieve this success are recognized by the compliance of Sentara Healthcare with all accreditation criteria required for accreditation with commendation.”
Sentara Healthcare is one of two accredited bodies under MSV that has been awarded with accreditation with commendation. The Physician Education department worked diligently in the previous accreditation term to collaborate with different departments, committees and system initiatives to reinforce the quality of the programs presented to meet the additional criteria needed for commendation. Currently, the Physician Education department oversees and assists in the planning of regularly scheduled series throughout the system, several computer-based training, conferences, maintenance of certification series, and is looking at how technology can be best used for future programs. Physician Education will continue to provide CME programs of the utmost quality to meet the ultimate goal of improving health every day.
