The Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit is a 9 bed unit serving many types of neurosurgical patients including but not limited to subarachnoid hemorrhages, hemorrhagic and embolic strokes, aneurysms, AVMs, all types of brain tumors, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and surgeries. The unit also serves as an overflow unit for our sister unit the Burn Trauma Unit as well as overflow from General ICU.
The NICU has a nurse-patient ratio of 2:1 with the ability to provide single patient care as needed. Our team consists primarily of Registered Nurses but also Nursing Care Partners and an Operations Coordinator. Each shift is staffed with; a Team Leader whose responsibilities include making staff assignments, bed flow, patient care and serves as a resource for staff, NCP, OPs coordinator, 4-5 RN's.
All RN's are ACLS certified within one year of joining the NICU team. We are also very proud of our nurses that have achieved their CCRN certification. We have several nurses who have been with Sentara for over 20 years and in the NICU for over 10. We pride ourselves on our cohesiveness and teamwork.
