The Vascular Services Department at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is the first and only Joint Commission Disease Specific Certified Center in the nation. Following are the unit and service components of this department:

Vascular Step-down is a 22 bed vascular surgery unit. The nurses provide care for pre and post vascular surgery patients. The primary patient population includes those patients whom have undergone procedures such as thoracic aortic aneurysm repair, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, lower extremity revascularization, carotid endarterectomy, carotid stent, kidney and pancreas transplant patients. Our mixture of staff includes registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, unlicensed personnel and an administrative assistant. Our routine nurse patient ratio is 1:4 (step-down patients) or 1:5 (med-surg patients).

Vascular ICU is a nine bed ICU that admits or receives vascular surgery patients as direct admit from the operating room. The primary patient population includes those patients whom have undergone procedures such as thoracic aortic aneurysm repair, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, lower extremity re-vascularization, carotid endarterectomy, carotid stent, kidney and pancreas transplant patients. The team consists of Registered nurses and unlicensed personnel. The nurse patient ration is 1:2.

Vascular Pre & Post Holding Area is a 6 bed unit providing the pre operative and post operative care for vascular patients undergoing a vascular procedure in the endovascular suite. This is considered an outpatient services area that provides care to the patient population undergoing peripheral stent, carotid stent, renal stent, renal angioplasty, abdominal angiogram, tunnel dialysis catheter insertions and vagal nerve stimulation are just to name a few. The staff members are inclusive of a registered nurse and nursing care partner complement. Nurse patient ratio is determined by the number of pre procedure to post procedure patients in the holding area.
