The Managed Care Residency program will provide the resident with exposure to and experience in all aspects of pharmacy practice in a managed care setting. The resident will develop a solid foundation in management, clinical and operational functions. This program will prepare the resident to assume managerial, clinical or operational responsibilities within a managed care organization. During the twelve months program the resident will also develop and contribute to pharmacy programs within the organization.
Note: This program is currently not accredited by AMCP/ASHP. Accreditation is being sought. Program Objectives The resident is expected to:

Manage the financial and clinical components of a pharmacy benefit.

Conduct basic pharmacoeconomic research.

Explain the pathophysiology and pharmacotherapeutics of common disease states encountered in the ambulatory setting.

Demonstrate appropriate oral and written presentation skills with pharmacists, physicians, other healthcare professionals, employers and members.

Develop teaching skills through assistance with student preceptorship.

Resident Responsibilities The resident is expected to:

Attend and participate in Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee Meetings

Attend and participate in Formulary Utilization Meetings

Attend and participate in the Physician Advisory Committee (PAC)

Attend any other appropriate meetings during a specific rotation

Attend staff meetings

Complete a minimum of one article for the provider newsletter

Complete a minimum of one article for the pharmacy newsletter

Complete a residency research project

Complete at least one drug use evaluation and present at P & T Committee

Complete at least one formulary review and present at P & T Committee

Complete at least one pharmacoeconomic analysis

Participate in contract negotiations for at least one drug product

Participate in monthly pharmacy journal club

Present at least one 1-hour continuing education program to the clinical pharmacy staff

Present research results at a residency conference (Eastern or Souteastern Sates)

Student oversight

Work in the preauthorization area 4-8 hours per week
Requirements of Residency Applicants Applicants should submit the following materials to the managed care pharmacy residency coordinator by January 15th:

Current resume or curriculum vitae

Three professional letters of reference

Transcripts of all pharmacy related education (copies of official transcripts are acceptable)

Personal statement of career goals
Other requirements: 
Pharm.D. from an accredited school of pharmacy or equivalent experience

An on-site interview

Eligible for Virginia licensure
Stipend and Benefits Two weeks of paid vacation and uninterrupted stipend during minor illness is included. A health insurance plan is provided. Travel assistance is provided for continuing education events and other professional activities.
