Fact: Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and is a major cause of disability.

Fiction: It is a disease for men.

Fact: For both men and women, heart disease and cancer ranked as the first and second leading causes of death, respectively. These two causes accounted for 50.0 percent of all deaths to men and 47.2 percent of all deaths to women in 2007.

Fiction: Prevention is not important, since technology has provided us with new treatments for heart disease.

Fact: More than 50 percent of people having a heart attack now die before ever reaching the hospital.
