Caring and professional service for people with hearing or balance disorders
What is an Audiologist?
An Audiologist is a professional with special training in the evaluation of the auditory system, including both hearing and balance disorders. An Audiologist understands the effects of hearing loss and the options for rehabilitation, including amplification with hearing aids.
What are the qualifications of the Sentara Audiologists?
Audiologists at Sentara CarePlex Hospital have a doctoral degree in Audiology. They are licensed by the state of Virginia to practice Audiology and to dispense hearing aids.
Who can have a hearing test?
No one is too young or too old to have their hearing evaluated. We test people of all ages, from newborns to senior citizens. The age of the patient will determine the specific test that is used.
What if I need a hearing aid?
If test results indicate that you, or your child, would benefit from hearing aids, the Audiologist will discuss the various options with you. We carry the most advanced digital technology at very reasonable prices, and select the aid most appropriate for each patient. After the initial fitting, there are follow-up visits for fine-tuning the instruments. All hearing aids are sold with a 30 day trial period.
How does an Audiologist evaluate a balance disorder?
Dizziness, or vertigo, can have many different causes, but often relate to the vestibular system in the inner ear. By recording eye movement, the Audiologist can evaluate the vestibular system.
