Sentara Norfolk General Hospital has performed open heart surgery since 1967 with proven success rates. Open heart surgery patient mortality rates surpass national averages and are better than some of the top-ranked heart programs in the nation.

In the 2014-15 America’s Best Hospitals ranking of U.S. News & World Report, Cardiology and Heart Surgery services at Sentara Heart Hospital were ranked as 44th among the top 50 programs in the nation. This is the 14th year consecutive Sentara has achieved a national ranking in Heart and it is the only Top-50 ranked heart program in Virginia

Hospitals on the list are evaluated based upon their national reputation among specialists, survival rates, patient safety measures, patient volume and nurse staffing. Whether a hospital is part of the Magnet Recognition Program®, administered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center and an affiliate of the American Nurses Association, is also a factor in the rankings.
