Sentara Obici Hospital has been meeting the health care needs of the Suffolk and western Tidewater communities for more than 50 years.

Subsequent to Sentara Obici Hospitals Certificate of Public Need request to expand its inpatient bed capacity, the commissioner of health approved the plan, thereby, increasing Obicis inpatient capacity from 138 beds to 168 beds.

The three-story bed tower will add nearly 35,000 square feet of usable space at the Godwin Boulevard location. It will adjoin the existing bed tower at the northeast corner adding additional value to a valued community asset.

The bed tower will encompass the construction of 48 inpatient beds--inclusive of the 30-bed expansion and the relocation of 18 inpatient beds--creating better staff and patient flow.

Twenty-four (24) beds will be utilized for increased medical-surgical capacity on the second floor and 24 beds will consist of a dedicated orthopedic wing on the first floor.

Convenience and efficiency are central to the integration of the bed tower and relocation of existing inpatient beds. HDR Architects of Omaha Nebraska designed the bed tower with the added flexibility to meet future generations health care needs. Hourigan Construction Co. of Richmond, Va., will begin construction shortly.

Anticipated opening of the Sentara Obici Hospital Bed Tower is scheduled for early 2010.
