Sentara Obici Hospital has the latest medical technologies available to help diagnose and treat a variety of health care issues. Our services to women are truly cutting edge - we are proud to offer digital mammography, which allows the technician instant feedback as to the accuracy of the image. It eliminates the waiting time needed to develop film to check if the breast was situated correctly, speeding up the process for the patient. It also provides a higher quality resolution that is accessible instantly on-line for the radiologists to view as well as the referring physician.

Adding to the effectiveness of mammography, Sentara Obici Hospital is the first in Hampton Roads to use the R2 Image Checker system, a computer-aided tool for screening that assists radiologists. Like a writer using a spell-checker in word processing, the R2 system performs a second reading after the radiologist to double check for suspicious signs of breast cancer. Any areas requiring additional review are clearly marked to indicate to the radiologist the section requiring attention.

Roughly 80 percent of all breast tissue biopsies result in benign diagnosis, which is good news for patients. However, surgery causes discomfort and trauma to the tissue. That is why Sentara Obici Hospital is offering alternative stereotactic biopsies that are minimally invasive. This accurate diagnostic procedure causes little pain, requires no sutures and can be performed in an hour's time on an outpatient basis. A surgeon and radiologist perform this biopsy together using a computer-enhanced precision needle-placement guidance system to withdraw tissue. Patients who have stereotactic biopsies can resume normal activities immediately following the procedure. The incision is so small  it doesn't even require stitches.

Providing good health care means offering a broad range of programs, services and educational opportunities so that patients have a full array of healthcare options. We've joined an elite group of healthcare providers who have adopted the Planetree model of patient-centered care delivered in an environment designed to help foster compassion, education and healing in a holistic environment.
