Roughly 80 percent of all breast tissue biopsies result in benign diagnosis, which is good news for patients. However, surgery causes discomfort and trauma to the tissue. That is why Sentara Obici Hospital is offering alternative stereotactic biopsies that are minimally invasive. This accurate diagnostic procedure causes little pain, requires no sutures and can be performed in an hour's time on an outpatient basis. A surgeon and radiologist perform this biopsy together using a computer-enhanced precision needle-placement guidance system to withdraw tissue. Patients who have stereotactic biopsies can resume normal activities immediately following the procedure. The incision is so small it doesn't even require stitches.
