ASSIST Program
A Special Service Involving Stricken Travelers
To serve the needs of family members of hospitalized patients from out of town, Williamsburg Community Hospital's ASSIST program was established in 1975.
ASSIST (A Special Service Involving Stricken Travelers) is a service of the Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center Auxiliary. Approximately 40 volunteers rotate through an on-call system, ready to provide the support, transportation, assistance in finding overnight accommodations, or personal services needed when a traveler to our city is unexpectedly hospitalized. Intended to provide those services which would ordinarily be provided by a family member or close friend if the patient were hospitalized at home, ASSIST has come to the aid of hundreds of tourists and their family members.
The need for ASSIST is identified in the Emergency Care Center, or on the nursing unit. This triggers the notification of the on-call volunteer.
