Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center Respiratory Care Services is staffed by credentialed respiratory care practitioners providing life-supporting care with the direction of a board certified physicians specializing in pulmonary and critical care medicine. Pulmonologists are specialized in treating acute and chronic conditions affecting the pulmonary system through a variety of mechanisms including oxygen therapy, inhaled medication therapy, breathing equipment, and education. Working closely with other health care professionals, they support the cardiopulmonary function of all age groups in a variety of settings including:

Mechanical ventilation for all age groups

Oxygen therapy

Inhaled bronchodilator therapy

Continuous Positive Airways Pressure (CPAP) and Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure Therapy (BiPAP)

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

Hyperinflation therapy for the prevention and treatment of pneumonia

Pulse oximetry (non-invasive test to assess blood oxygen saturation)

Arterial blood gases (ABG) - a test to determine blood oxygen and carbon dioxide levels

Smoking cessation counseling

Disease education (i.e. asthma, chronic lung disease)
