Our History, Our Promise, and Our Future
Sentara Medical Group was created in 1995 to optimize patient access by expanding Sentara’s geographical reach through strategically placed physician offices. Initially it was composed of mainly primary care physician practices and a few specialized internal medicine physicians; however, over the years the group has evolved into a large multi-specialty group.
Today, Sentara Medical Group brings together more than 380 primary care physicians and specialists and provides dedicated physician coverage and other high-quality medical services and expertise to patients across Southeastern Virginia and Northeast North Carolina. In addition to family medicine, internal medicine and pediatric physicians, the group includes specialists in cardiology, urology, surgery, surgical oncology, vascular services, neurology, pulmonary & critical care medicine, anesthesiology, hospital medicine and more.

Sentara Medical Group also continues to evaluate and invest in cutting edge technology and the incorporation of the latest advancements in patient care.
Efforts are now underway to install an electronic medical record system called Sentara eCare ® throughout all Sentara facilities and offices. Ultimately this Sentara eCare ® system will link Sentara Medical Group practices together along with Sentara Hospitals, outpatient facilities, and more. Physicians will also be able to access and reference their patient’s hospital records from the physician office. This will enable both enhanced communication between providers as well as improved coordination and continuity of care.
Another tool being introduced through Sentara Medical Group practices is Sentara MyChart®, an online tool that provides patients with secure access to their physician and electronic medical record. This tool allows patients to become an even more active member of their healthcare team. They can also schedule appointments, request prescription refills and review test results through a secure online portal.
