Active Release Technique (ART) is a hands-on treatment technique developed by P. Michael Leahy, DC, CCSP, a chiropractor from Colorado, to decrease pain and improve mobility of tight tissues or entrapped nerves and blood vessels. Certain conditions respond well to active release technique:

 Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and other Peripheral Nerve Entrapments 
 Spinal Pain and Immobility 
 Tendinitis of Various Joints of the Body 
 Sciatica 
 Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJ) 
 Recurrent Sprains or Strains

Only certified physical therapists and occupational therapists who have taken the requisite courses for the upper extremity, lower extremity, and/or the spine, and passed the examination, can practice active release technique. Providers must also attend continuing education courses to maintain their certification.
