Myofascial release is a specialized manual therapy technique which employs both direct and indirect pressure to the fascia, the dense tissue that surrounds muscle, bone, nerve, blood vessels, as well as all of the internal organs, in order to relieve pain, break up restrictions, and improve range of motion.
In order for a physical therapist or occupational therapist to practice myofascial release, he or she must complete specific continuing education courses.
