Browser Cookies Are Turned Off

If you're seeing a message that your browser's cookie functionality is turned off, it's possible that you don't have cookies enabled in your browser. Below are listed browser-specific instructions on how to enable your cookies.

Microsoft Internet Explorer

To enable cookies in Internet Explorer 7 or 8:

  1. Click Start > Control Panel. (Note: with Windows XP Classic View, click the Windows Start button > Settings > Control Panel).
  2. Double-click the Internet Options icon.
  3. Click the Privacy tab.
  4. Click the Advanced button.
  5. Select the option 'Override automatic cookie handling' under the Cookies section in the Advanced Privacy Settings window.
  6. Select the 'Accept' or 'Prompt' option under 'First-party Cookies.'
  7. Select the 'Accept' or 'Prompt' option under 'Third-party Cookies.' (Note: if you select the 'Prompt' option, you'll be prompted to click OK every time a website attempts to send you a cookie.)
  8. In the Internet Options window, click OK to exit.

To enable cookies in Internet Explorer 6:

  1. Click Start > Control Panel. (Note: with Windows XP Classic View, click the Windows Start button > Settings > Control Panel).
  2. Click the Advanced button.
  3. Select the option 'Override Automatic Cookie Handling.'

Mozilla Firefox

To enable cookies in Mozilla Firefox 3.x (PC):

  1. Click Tools > Options.
  2. Click Privacy in the top panel.
  3. Set 'Firefox will': to Use custom settings for history.
  4. Check the box next to Accept cookies from sites to enable cookies, or uncheck it to disable them.
  5. Click OK.

To enable cookies in Mozilla Firefox 2.x (PC):

  1. Click Tools > Options.
  2. Click Privacy in the top panel.
  3. Select the checkbox labeled 'Accept cookies from sites.'
  4. Click OK.

To enable cookies in Mozilla Firefox (Mac):

  1. Go to the Firefox drop-down menu.
  2. Select Preferences.
  3. Click Privacy.
  4. Set 'Firefox will': to Use custom settings for history.
  5. Check the box next to Accept cookies from sites to enable cookies, or uncheck it to disable them.
  6. Click OK.

Chrome

  1. To enable cookies in Chrome (PC):
  2. Click the Tools menu.
  3. Select Options.
  4. Click the Under the Hood tab.
  5. Click Content settings in the 'Privacy' section.
  6. Make sure Allow local data to be set is selected to allow both first-party and third-party cookies. For any given webpage, first-party cookies are cookies that are set by the site domain listed in the address bar. Third-party cookies come from other domain sources that have items, such as ads or images, embedded on the page. If you only want to accept first-party cookies, check the box next to Block all third-party cookies without exception.

To enable cookies in Chrome (Mac):

  1. Select Chrome > Preferences on the menu bar.
  2. Click the Under the Hood tab.
  3. Click Content settings in the 'Privacy' section.
  4. Make sure Allow local data to be set is selected to allow both first-party and third-party cookies. For any given webpage, first-party cookies are cookies that are set by the site domain listed in the address bar. Third-party cookies come from other domain sources that have items, such as ads or images, embedded on the page. If you only want to accept first-party cookies, check the box next to Block all third-party cookies without exception.

Safari

  1. To enable cookies in Safari:
  2. Go to the Safari drop-down menu.
  3. Select Preferences.
  4. Click Security in the top panel.
  5. Under 'Accept Cookies' select the option 'Only from sites you navigate to.'
  6. Please Note: If you've already checked that your cookies are enabled and you're still seeing an error message that your browser's cookie functionality is turned off, try opening a new window in your browser. Sometimes using tabs in a single browser instance can cause your cookies to stick. 

To Clear Your Browser History

For Internet Explorer:

  1. Open the browser
  2. Click Tools
  3. Choose Delete Browser History
  4. Check only History, Form Data, and passwords
  5. Click Delete

For Mozilla Firefox:

  1. Open the browser
  2. Click Tools
  3. Click Clear Recent History
  4. Choose the Time Range = Everything
  5. Check Form and Search History and Active Logins only

For Safari:

  1. Open the browser
  2. Click the Widget wheel on the right top of the screen
  3. Choose Reset Safari from the list
  4. Check remove saved names and passwords and remove other auto fill form text.
  5. Click Reset

For Google Chrome:

  1. Open the browser
  2. Click the wrench in the top right corner
  3. Choose Tools
  4. Choose Clear browsing data
  5. Choose period of time “the beginning of time”
  6. Check clear saved passwords and clear saved auto fill form data ( uncheck everything else)
  7. Click Clear Browsing Data.

For Opera:

  1. Open the browser
  2. Click Opera in the top left hand corner
  3. Choose settings
  4. Choose Delete Private Data
  5. Click detailed options
  6. Uncheck all items and then check only clear password manager

Content Advisor Feature Enabled
(Adding a site to your approved list - Internet Explorer Users Only)

If you are using IE7 or IE8 and have enabled the Content Advisor feature, adding MyChart to your list of approved sites may resolve this issue.

To determine if Content Advisor is enabled:

  • Open Internet Explorer.
  • Click on Tools and then select Internet Options.
  • The Internet Options window will open. Click on the Content tab. Take note of the first button below the Content Advisor heading.
    • If this button says 'Disable', this means that Content Advisor is currently enabled.
    • If this button says 'Enable', this means that Content Advisor is NOT currently enabled. Please do not change Content Advisor settings at this time.

To add MyChart to your list of approved sites:

  • Open Internet Explorer.
  • Click on Tools and then select Internet Options.
  • The Internet Options window will open. Click on the Content tab.
  • Click on the Settings button only if Content Advisor is currently enabled.
  • You will be prompted to enter the supervisor password. You must know the supervisor password to add MyChart to the list of approved sites.
  • After entering the password, the Content Advisor window will open. Click on the Approved Sites tab.
  • Enter https://mychart.sentara.com in the 'Allow this website:' box and click the Always button.
  • Click OK until all windows are closed.
  • Close and restart Internet Explorer.

To ensure your Transport Layer Security and Secure Socket Layer Security is set correctly for IE 7, 8, and 9

  • Open Internet Explorer.
  • Click on Tools and then select Internet Options.
  • The Internet Options window will open. Click on the Advanced tab.
  • Scroll to the bottom section labeled Security.
  • You will see the following items 6 from the bottom:  Use SSL 2.0, US SSL 3.0, and Use TLS 1.0.
  • Please make sure SSL 2.0 is unchecked and that SSL 3.0 and TLS 1.0 are checked.
  • Click OK until all windows are closed.
  • Close and restart Internet Explorer.   

If the previous steps do not resolve the problem, please try using a different web browser.  If you do not already have one then you may download Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, or Apple Safari for free.
