Why Do You Train?
I train to get better in the sports that I participate in. I always remember the phrase “Practice Makes Perfect.” So my thought process is if I continue to train hard then I will see the results.

What Are Your Training Goals
My training goals are to get stronger, faster, and quicker.

What Are Your Sports Goals
My long term sports goal is to become a professional football player or track athlete. However for the time being, my goal is to continue to set national records in track, and strive to be the best in football in order to pave the way to reaching my long term goals. I also want to continue to make honor roll in school so that when colleges look at me for sports, they will see that I am just as good academically.

Who's Your Athletic Role Model? Who's Your Favorite Athlete From the 757?
My Athletic Role Model and Favorite Athlete from the 757 are one in the same, LaShawn Merritt. LaShawn is a Portsmouth native who is currently a professional track athlete and is ranked in the top 3 in the world for the 400m. He continues to be true to his sport, training hard, and being a good example to kids by showing that if you stay humble, work hard, and be patient, you will reach your goals.

Velocity Coach on Joel Coleman
"Since being exposed to our program here at Velocity, Joel has been able to take his incredible natural talent and speed, and transform into an elite athlete despite his young age. Now, not only does he move faster and more explosively, but he has also improved his running technique and power."
-- Brian Maurer, Senior Sports Performance Coach

>> TIP OF THE MONTH <<

Training the Imbalance: Part 1 – The Hip Flexor”

When training, many athletes often focus on the big movements such as squatting or bench press. However, it is just as important to train smaller movements, such as hip flexion past 90 degrees which is important while sprinting/accelerating. Athletes commonly suffer injuries due to their inefficiency with these small movements. Therefore, having the ability to perform all functionally specific movements is important not only for maximum performance, but injury prevention as well.

To Test for Weakness:
1. Stand on one foot with opposite foot on a plyo box (24” is suggested). The knee should be hip level.
2. With hands on your head, lift foot off box and hold for 5 seconds
Result: Inability to lift and hold indicates weakness

Shawn Preston PictureTo Correct the Weakness:
1. Position yourself as in test
2. Perform 3 sets of 10 repetitions, 2-3 days per week
3. To increase difficulty, use resistance bands from floor or around both thighs
