Sentara Obici Hospital Receives
Compassionate Employer Award
A nomination letter submitted by an employee earned Sentara Obici Hospital recognition as one of 96 “Compassionate Employers” named by Compassionate Friends, a national self-help organization for people who have lost a child, grandchild or sibling. The nomination came because of the way the hospital responded, as a workplace, to such an event. Congratulations to Sentara Obici not only for living the Sentara mission, but for doing it with great compassion.

Medication Discount Cards Help Uninsured
During 2007, Sentara raised $900,000 to help fund United Way of Southampton Roads programs like the discount prescription medication cards that helped a man recently at a K-Mart pharmacy in Virginia Beach. Agency Spokesperson Angela Kellam explained, “I told the pharmacy technician how the cards may be used by individuals without prescription drug coverage. The tech replied, ‘Can you wait for just a moment?’ She got on the microphone and said, "Would Mr. Jones please return to the pharmacy immediately!" A man approached the pharmacy window. The tech told him, "Mr. Jones, this lady is from the United Way and she just brought me these discount cards for your medications. I would like to re-ring your order to see if we can save you enough money for you to get the medication that you had to leave behind.’ The technician voided the original sale and used the discount card. Indeed the savings was sufficient to cover the additional prescription.”

Sentara Obici Hospital Receives Grant for Community Health Outreach
The Obici Healthcare Foundation has awarded Sentara Obici Hospital’s Community Health Outreach Program (CHOP) a two-year grant totaling $923,348. CHOP is a multi-faceted effort begun in 1998 that offers chronic disease management for the medically indigent, a diabetes education program, and support and education to first-time mothers. Included are two new pilot programs, telemedicine technology and a community encourager, both which will allow CHOP to expand their services further into the community, enhancing the health of more of the region’s citizens.
