Sentara CarePlex Hospital Auxiliary recently supported the Dorothy G. Hoefer Comprehensive Breast Center by providing financial aid to several patients in need of mammography services. The board also agreed to financially support the replacement of Sentara’s Mobile Mammography Van. During summer 2008, Volunteer Services hosted nearly 50 junior volunteers at the hospital. The auxiliary sponsored an ice cream social in late August at Sentara CarePlex Hospital featuring a representative from the new Peninsula Town Center in Hampton who gave an update on the project. Sentara Bayside Hospital/Sentara Princess Anne Campus Auxiliary held a Monarch jewelry sale on October 28 at the hospital. They are gearing up for their Tree of Life Celebration, planned for December 10. Sentara employees are invited to make a donation and place the name of a loved one on the tree to be honored. For more information, contact Auxiliary President Barbara Fosina at (757) 460-3871. The auxiliary will hold its holiday party for members on December 17 from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. in the hospital’s private dining room.
Sentara Obici Hospital Auxiliary is sponsoring a $5 jewelry sale at the hospital on December 11 and 12, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day in hospital classrooms B and C. On December 4, the auxiliary held its Tree of Lights ceremony. Sentara employees are invited to purchase a light to put on the tree. For more information, call (757) 934-4789.

Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center Auxiliary’s chemo cap team of the Pineapple Knitters, comprised of community members who knit and donate a wide variety of handmade hats to cancer patients who lose their hair, was the recipient of two awards in 2008 – the United Way of Greater Williamsburg’s 2008 Cruikshank Spirit of the Community Award, and the Woman With a Cause Award. The program was founded by Ginny Dittman and introduced to the public in January 2003. The team has grown to 15 knitters who have made more than 650 chemo caps for patients in our community and a number of states, such as Massachusetts, New York and North Carolina. The auxiliary approved funding for the purchase of “Deaf Talk,” a wireless, portable communications device that will facilitate better communication between hospital staff and hearing-impaired patients. The auxiliary accepted a Malinda Memorial Fund check for $1,000 from Bob Campbell in support of its free mammogram program. Campbell lost his favorite aunt, Malinda Lou, to breast cancer.
Sentara Leigh Hospital/Sentara Norfolk General Hospital/Sentara Heart Hospital Auxiliary held a successful Books are Fun sale on October 9-10, 2008. Get a jump on your holiday shopping at the $5 Masquerade jewelry sale at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital set for December 10 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Dining Rooms 1 and 2. Please join us in congratulating the new Sentara Norfolk General Hospital gift shop manager Barbara Bailey, a longtime Sentara employee who was promoted in mid-October 2008 from her role as assistant manager. Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital Auxiliary held a $5 jewelry sale in mid-September and a book sale in mid-October. They held their annual purse sale on December 2-3, 2008, in the hospital lobby. The sale featured a broad assortment of designer handbags offered between 50 percent and 70 percent off retail price. Wallets, luggage and brief cases were also available. For a small donation, the auxiliary is again accepting names of friends, family members or loved ones, living or deceased, to be honored on their Love Light Tree. For more information, call (757) 721-3504 or inquire at the gift shop. The auxiliary held its general meeting and holiday luncheon on November 19 in the Health Education Center building.
