Network: December 2008

I would like to congratulate the dedicated team of Sentara physicians and staff whose vision, planning and teamwork have made
urology care at Sentara a nationally and internationally recognized, comprehensive program and the leading provider of urologic care in southeastern Virginia.
Sentara is a proud partner with Sentara Urology Specialists,
Urology of Virginia, now a member of Sentara Medical Group. These dedicated board-certified urologists along with all of the employees who work at nine different offices across southeastern Virginia, serve patients with a wide variety of urologic conditions.
They specialize in the treatment of patients experiencing everything from
urinary incontinence, a quality of life impacting disorder, that affects 13 million Americans,* to the life-threatening disease of prostate cancer, which affects 1 in 6 men each year.*
These skilled Sentara physicians participate in kidney transplant living donor surgeries through Sentara Norfolk General Hospital’s kidney program,
ranked among the top 50 programs in the nation in 2008 by U.S. News & World Report.

Sentara urologists are also nationally recognized leaders in the use of minimally invasive techniques for the treatment of many different urological conditions, such as kidney stones and enlarged prostate. They operate one of Virginia’s largest robotic surgery programs for prostatectomy, logging the highest volume of
da Vinci® robotic procedures.
Only a select number of medical centers in the nation — of which Sentara is one — are capable of performing complex genital reconstructive surgery, including treatment for Peyronie's disease, pelvic organ prolapse and traumatic urethral injuries.
Our physicians work in conjunction with Eastern Virginia Medical School holding faculty leadership positions which allow them the opportunity to conduct training and clinical research trials to investigate new treatments for urological conditions and diseases.
All of these accomplishments – and yet Sentara’s urology program continues to grow with additional urological services coming to the Sentara CarePlex Hospital campus in early 2009. These offerings consist of outpatient urology procedure rooms, physician offices and enhanced urological oncology services including the prostate cancer program and a consumer-friendly service called patient navigator. Thanks to these ongoing efforts, Sentara Urology Specialists is creating a new standard for urologic care.
