Advanced Imaging Center at Sentara Port Warwick Opens Peninsula patients can now experience comprehensive and technologically advanced imaging capabilities with the recent debut of the Peninsula’s first
Advanced Imaging Center at Sentara Port Warwick. This dedicated outpatient center features a 32-slice CT, ultrasound, digital x-ray and an Open Bore MRI — a true 1.5 Tesla high field power capable of generating highly detailed images with an open-bore patient friendly design ideal for obese, elderly, pediatric or claustrophobic patients. In addition to the expertise of on-site subspecialized radiologists ensuring the highest-quality results, customer convenience coupled with the advanced capabilities for precise and speedy diagnosis are hallmarks of the new center.
PRESTIGE® Cervical Disc Debuts at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital Neurosurgeon Dr. Joseph Koen recently performed the
first placement of the PRESTIGE® cervical disc at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital – a clinical first in Hampton Roads. The stainless steel device offers better pain relief and greater range of motion post-surgery than the standard fusion method. The first patient, shipyard worker Mike Woodyard, has suffered neck pain and arm weakness since an on-the-job injury in the 1980s. He is hoping the PRESTIGE® disc will allow him to keep working without fear that the next injury would disable him.
3T MRI in Place at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital The area's first hospital-based 3T Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), the Magnetom Trio 3T MRI, offers physicians clearer images that may change their surgical approach—specifically in neurology, neurosurgery, breast imaging, orthopedics, and urology. Its combined speed and strength mean acquiring the highest quality images possible with less chance of patient movement, reducing the need for rescans. Scans previously taking up to an hour can now be done in minutes. With full body imaging capabilities repositioning patients is not necessary which makes its design especially comfortable for frail/elderly patients and anyone apprehensive about the process.
Procedure Removes Tumors Through the Nose A team of cutting-edge surgeons at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is now performing an innovative procedure called transnasal endoscopic skull base surgery (or neuro-endoscopic procedure) for removing pituary and other tumors through a natural opening in the body – the nose. As with other minimally invasive procedures, the benefits of avoiding a large incision include less pain, minimal scarring, and shorter recovery time for the patient.
