Carol C. Flynn has volunteered for the past 14 years at the hospital in Purchasing and the Volunteer Office. She also makes hats for the babies in the nursery.
Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital Auxiliary
held its annual book sale in October 2008, collecting $9,411 in sales. In November a check for $15,000 was presented to Dr. John Kenerson and Dr. Andy Dickerson of Cardiovascular Associates whose partnership with the hospital has provided medication assistance for the indigent and working uninsured for eight years.
The Tennis Tournament Committee and its volunteers held a successful tournament with proceeds awarded to the Hospital’s Cardiology Department.
At the November meeting, the Auxiliary acknowledged the talent and generosity of Howard Jones, who for many years has donated roses from his garden to the Visitor Services Committee. Any hospital inpatient who is alone or without family in the area receives a vase of roses during the summer.
The auxiliary held its most popular and successful vendor sale on December 2-3, 2008, In The Bag, selling more than $20,000 worth of purses, wallets, briefcases and luggage. Another sale was held February 10-11.
Sentara CarePlex Hospital Auxiliary
is pleased with the success of the Uninsured Woman for Mammogram Program, a cooperative program with staff from the Dorothy E. Hoefer Comprehensive Breast Center at Port Warwick to help ensure that every woman can get a mammogram when needed. In the short time the center has been open they have been able to help 20 women who otherwise would not have gotten mammograms.
Hospital volunteers finished the year with a Santa’s Dinner for children of hospital staff and the community. Approximately 15 children enjoyed dinner. At the end of the evening, Santa and Hospital Administrator Debra Flores ensured that children in the Emergency Room waiting area were also given treat bags.
Sentara Bayside Hospital/Sentara Princess Anne Auxiliary
held their annual Tree of Lights campaign in December 2008 and accepted numerous donations in honor or memory of a loved one. At the Auxiliary’s February General Board Meeting, all monies received from the Tree of Lights campaign were presented to Dorothy Weeks, RN, manager of Sentara Home Care Service’s Hospice Program. Auxiliary members find the continued generosity of the Bayside community truly heartwarming. The Sentara Bayside Hospital Gift Shop had standing room only during the month of December. All auxilians who help out in the gift shop are to be congratulated for their efforts.
Sentara Obici Hospital Auxiliary members enjoyed a holiday luncheon and gift exchange in December
.
Sentara Obici Hospital Auxiliary
held its lighting ceremony of the Tree Of Lights in December. The volunteers treated employees, family and hospital guests to homemade goodies and a delightful performance by the Nansemond Suffolk Academy Choir. Proceeds from the Tree of Light Campaign went to Sentara Home Care Services’ Hospice Program.
Later in December, auxiliary members enjoyed a potluck holiday luncheon and gift exchange. Some volunteers followed up with a field trip to Colonial Williamsburg for shopping and lunch. The gift shop did well with “a special a day” promotion, giving discounts to shoppers for the week preceding Christmas. Carolers from local high schools visited the Hospital throughout December.
The Auxiliary to Sentara Hospitals-Norfolk, Inc
. which includes Sentara Leigh Hospital, Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and Sentara Heart hospitals, installed new officers at the January 2009 meeting. Congratulations to these new officers: president - Mary Taylor; recording secretary - Jeanne Williams; treasurer - Jackie Pace; and corresponding secretary and Parliamentarian - Sarah Stedfast. There continues to be a need for volunteers to serve in the Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and Sentara Leigh Hospital gift shops. Those interested in volunteering at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, may contact Robin Valure at 388-3461; and at Sentara Leigh Hospital, contact Joyce Abbey at 261-6940.
Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center Auxiliary
held its Festival of Lights Gala fundraiser on Nov. 20, 2008, with175 people in attendance. The fundraiser was successful raising nearly $18,000, thanks to the help of six generous sponsors, a silent auction that raised $2,395, a raffle and Tree Light sales of $3,975. The auxiliary also had a Hot Diggity Dog Dinner with Santa Claus on Dec. 9, 2008, for children of hospital employees. More than 100 people attended and the auxiliary gave out 52 gift bags to children age 2 and over.
The Annual Auxiliary Luncheon was held on Jan. 29, 2009, at the Williamsburg Lodge to celebrate the installation of Officers for 2009: Congratulations go to president – Barbara Smith; president elect/membership - Debi Schaefer; program chair - Diane Stevenson; treasurer - Steve McGinnis; and secretary - Louise Lippert.
