Sentara Healthcare Hereoes Featured in Inside Business The Februay 9 issue of
Inside Business featured a special insert honoring Health Care Heroes. The
Organ Donation and Transplant Teams at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and the
Sentara eCare® team, were honored with the Health Care Heroes Awards by
Inside Business and
Tidewater Parent. The awards honor those who epitomize the word ”hero" in the delivery of health care to the community.
Decision to Discontinue Labor and Delivery Services at Sentara CarePlex Hospital Featured in Media On February 16, WVEC-TV13, WAVY-TV 10,
The Virginian-Pilot and
The Daily Press featured stories on the April 3, 2009, closing of the 12-bed labor and delivery unit and nursery at Sentara CarePlex Hospital. No other services at the hospital will be impacted, and the hospital will continue to provide gynecological services.

Virginian-Pilot Features Employee Wellness Article A February 8 article in
The Virginian-Pilot titled “Get Healthy with Your Employer’s Wellness Program,” was authored by John DeGruttola, senior vice president for sales and marketing at
Optima Health. The article discussed the importance of employee wellness programs and how more employers are offering programs ranging from healthy eating and exercise initiatives to screening for cancer. Health insurance carriers are regularly offering wellness and disease management programs as part of their services and are struggling to keep up with the demand. Annual surveys of Fortune 500 companies conducted by a leading benefits consulting firm have found that employer interest in wellness programs has doubled over the past five years.
Virginian-Pilot Features Beach Health Clinic Article A February 7 article in
The Virginian-Pilot titled “Despite Concerns, Health Center will Open Monday in Beach,” highlighted the Feb. 9 opening of a community health center in Virginia Beach. The clinic is a culmination of a move that began when a 2004 study showed 176,000 Hampton Roads residents were uninsured, many with significant health problems, including high blood pressure, diabetes and asthma.

Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center Featured in Health Journal The February issue of the
Health Journal featured an article about Williamsburg resident Bill Smith, who suffered a massive heart attack at the YMCA, which is located on the campus of
Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center. Smith, who was treated in the hospital’s Emergency Department, became a candidate for ARCTIC (Advanced Resuscitation Cooling Therapeutic and Intensive Care), a program at Medical College of Virgina (MCV), using therapeutic hypothermia to preserve neurologic function following such an event. Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center became a satellite program for ARCTIC in the summer of 2008. Smith was then transferred to MCV by
Sentara Nightingale and became the first patient from Williamsburg to be treated through the ARCTIC partnership. After cardiac bypass surgery and physical therapy, Smith has resumed normal activity and is back exercising at the YMCA.
Sentara Teen Clinic Featured in Daily Press A Jan. 31, 2009, article in
The Daily Press featured an article about the Sentara New Town teen clinic. The clinic, which opened in March 2008, helps teens deal with changing health issues and lets teenagers discuss sometimes very mature topics regarding their well-being.
New Teaching Tool Featured in Virginia Gazette A Jan. 24, 2009, article in
The Virginia Gazette entitled “Medicine from Dummies” discussed $60,000 high-tech, computer-programmable Manakin called William S. Burg, a unique and creative teaching tool for nurses now in place at Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center.
Trade Publication Features Sentara Quality Spokesperson A quality improvement article in the January 2009 edition of
HealthLeaders magazine entitled “Five Steps to Bad Healthcare” included quotes from Gene H. Burke, MD, vice president and executive medical director of clinical effectiveness at Sentara.

Sentara’s OB Right Program Praised in Industry Publication The Jan. 1, 2009, issue of
Ob.Gyn. News featured an article entitled “Near Miss Reporting and the OB Right Program,” which showcased the collaborative effort between Sentara physicians and staff and Eastern Virginia Medical School faculty to establish the OB Right program whose mission is to minimize injury to the mother and infant and reduce adverse patient safety events during labor and delivery. The program features the use of a near miss reporting form to improve communications and proactive safety measures.
Segment on Sleep Disorders aired on WAVY-TV Channel 10 The Christian Broadcasting Network 700 Club produced a story about sleep disorder treatment at Sentara that aired on WAVY-TV10 on Dec. 17, 2008. The segment, which focused on insomnia and other sleep disorders, treatment options and the pros and cons of sleep medications, included interviews with Sleep Center Director Catesby Ware, Dr. Robert Vorona and a patient. WAVY-TV 10 Highlights Weight Loss Surgery at Sentara Dr. Stephen Wohlgemuth was interviewed for a WAVY-TV 10 segment that aired on Dec. 15, 2008, and discussed why a growing number of people are considering weight loss surgery. The reasons for the increase include higher numbers of people considered morbidly obese coupled with the fact that the surgery is becoming less invasive, more socially acceptable and often covered by health insurance. Virginian-Pilot article entitled “Health Insurance Costs Inching Up for Virginia Employers.” John DeGruttola, senior vice president for sales and marketing for Optima Health, discussed how patterns among area employers are similar to those seen nationwide. He said employers, to keep costs down, are asking more about wellness and smoking cessation programs and initiatives to manage disease.

The Virginian-Pilot on Nov. 15, 2008. The focus of the article was Evelyn LeGree, a patient diagnosed with incurable pancreatic cancer, who allowed a reporter to follow her care by a
Sentara palliative care team for weeks before her death.

Daily Press Features Article on Prostate Cancer Survivors An article appeared in the Nov. 8, 2008, issue of
The Daily Press discussing the benefits of a unique support group, the da Vinci Fraternity, that aims to get prostate cancer survivors to speak openly about tough issues they face such as incontinence and erectile dysfunction. The common thread among the members is that they all had a prostatectomy to remove the cancerous prostate using a
da Vinci robot.
