Mutt and Jeff's 5K Run/Walk |
Glenda Williamson, RN, OCN, patient navigator |
Sentara CarePlex Hospital Auxiliary raised more than $7,500 in the Mutt and Jeff’s 5K Run/Walk event at City Center Oyster Point on March 28 to benefit colon cancer patients in need. The auxiliary handled all of the funds raised in the race, as well as assisted with the event, which drew 164 runners and walkers, aged seven to 70+ years.
A special thanks to Glenda Williamson, RN, OCN, patient navigator, Sentara CarePlex Hospital, who championed the initiative because in her role as patient navigator, she is touched by many colorectal cancer patients who are unable to afford some of their care.
Cancer Crusade "Warrior Dog Tags" were presented to three colorectal cancer survivors, two of whom ran and one who provided her service as one of the race course monitors.
Our appreciation to everyone who assisted with the race, as well as all those who purchased raffle tickets and participated in the auction of the Lance Armstrong signed photo. The event was so well received that many of the runners offered to help with any future events to benefit cancer patients.

On April 30, the auxiliary hosted the VAHAV Hampton Roads District Spring Meeting. Representatives from six hospitals in the Hampton Roads district, along with state representatives including Carolyn Johnson, president, VAHAV, attended. The auxiliary welcomes the hospital’s summer junior volunteers. Congratulations to Volunteer Services for receiving 57 applications.
On April 28, the hospital began its Patient Assistant and Liaison (PAL) program. A specially trained group of volunteers provide daily rounding and conduct a patient satisfaction survey to patients within the first 48 hours of their stay. The surveys provide timely feedback to unit managers so they can address patient questions, concerns and comments. The questions are based on the national HCAHPS Survey and are designed to help measure the quality of care the hospital is providing. The surveys also help familiarize patients with the questions they will see when they receive the official survey tool after their stay. When the hospital receives a negative report, the unit manager and patient advocate, Dana Rosa, visit the patient to provide service recovery before the patient has been discharged. The results also provide an opportunity to recognize staff for proving exceptional customer service.
