COVA Connect Pilot Project Receives Widespread Media Coverage The June 12, 2009, issues of
The Daily Press; examiner.com, an online publication based in Denver, Colo.;
The Virginian Pilot online, along with WHS-ITV, a Harrisonburg, Va. TV station, and Apria Healthcare Online, featured stories on Optima Health being awarded a multi-year contract beginning July 1, 2009 to operate a pilot project with the Commonwealth of Virginia that offers state employees in specific Hampton Roads zip codes targeted health, prevention and clinical care service programs aimed at developing a healthier state workforce.

The Health Journal Features Cover Story on Nursing Shortage The June 2009 issue of
The Health Journal, a monthly publication which reaches from Williamsburg to Virginia Beach, featured a front page feature article, “The Nursing Shortage.” Shelly Cohen, director of
Sentara School of Health Professions, and Ethlyn Gibson, RN, MSN, interim, VP/Nurse executive, Sentara CarePlex Hospital, were both interviewed for the article.

Suffolk News Herald Features Continuing Coverage of “Donate Life” Program
The May 28, 2009, issue of the
Suffolk News Herald featured an article about Sentara Obici Hospital flying the “Donate Life” flag outside of the hospital in recognition of a deceased donor offering organs for transplant. The parents of a donor and a transplant recipient were featured in the article.
Optima Article Receives Media Coverage A May 24, 2009, issue of
The Virginian Pilot and the June issue of the
Health Journal both featured an article entitled, “The First Big Step After Graduation, How College Graduates Find Adequate Health Insurance,” written by John DeGruttola, senior vice president of marketing and sales at
Optima Health. The article provided tips on what to look for, as well where to research information about health plans.

Sentara Obici Hospital Orthopedic Expo Featured in Suffolk News Herald
A May 6, 2009, article entitled, “Ortho-Expo Explores Treatment Options,” was featured in the Suffolk News Herald. The article highlighted a May 14 health expo. The hospital held the expo to provide information about potential orthopedic procedures, as well as the new minimally invasive procedures for hip and knee surgeries, including partial knee replacements.
Inside Business Features Article About Sentara Princess Anne
The May 2009 issue of Inside Business also featured an article about the collaborative efforts of Sentara Healthcare and Bon Secours Hampton Roads to collaboratively run Sentara Princess Anne. The plan is now under review by the Virginia Department of Health. Sentara Vice President for Southside Hampton Roads, Mike Gentry, was interviewed for the article.

The Sentara eCare Health Network® was featured in the following articles, the May 2009 issue of Inside Business, “Stimulating Better Health,” the May 6, 2009, issue of The Daily Press, “Stimulus Gives Incentives for Health Records,” and the May 6, 2009, issue of The San Diego Union-Tribune, “Stimulus Gives Incentives for Health Records.” The articles, which feature an interview with Sentara Vice President and Chief Information Officer Bert Reese, highlight the Sentara eCare Health Network®. Dr. Jeffrey Rich Featured in Fredericksburg Paper
The April 30, 2009, issue of
The Free-Lance Star of Fredericksburg, Va, featured an article entitled, “A Shot in the Arm for K.G. Needy.” Dr. Jeffrey Rich, a surgeon who directed the heart transplant program at Sentara Heart Hospital for four years, volunteers each week at the free clinic. In 2008, he earned the Society of Thoracic Surgeons' Distinguished Service Award.

Sentara Nightingale Air Ambulance Featured in The Virginian Pilot
The April 30, 2009, issue of
The Virginian Pilot featured an article about
Sentara Nightingale Air Ambulance and how many flights it has made to northeastern North Carolina. Nightingale, which was manufactured in 1986, has more than 10,000 flight hours on its airframe.

The Virginia Gazette, featured an article entitled, “Sentara Hustling To Land Specialists.” The article highlighted the physician recruitment efforts of Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center, which have included interventional cardiologist Dr. Surjya Das. Vice President and Hospital Administrator Bob Graves, along with Vice President and Senior Medical Director of Sentara Medical Group, Dr. Shane Peng, were both interviewed for the article.
Optima Featured in The Virginian-Pilot The April 26, 2009, issue of
The Virginian-Pilot business section featured an article entitled, “Health Reimbursement Arrangements (HRAs): Reducing Healthcare Costs for Employers, Helping Employees Cover Expenses,” written by John DeGruttola, senior vice president of marketing and sales at Optima Health. The article featured information on Consumer Directed Health Plans (CHDPs), along with different funding options, such as Health Savings Account (HAS), Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) and/or Flexible Spending Account (FSA). All of these plans help reduce the cost of health insurance for employers and employees. The article was also featured in the Richmond Chamber of Commerce eNewsletter.

Sentara Featured on The 700 Club TV On April 22, 2009, Sentara was featured on The 700 Club TV in a story that highlighted Sentara efforts in Patient Safety and the Sentara eCare Health Network®. Sentara Vice President and Executive Medical Director of Clinical Effectiveness, Dr. Gene Burke was interviewed for the segment.
Sentara eCare® Highlighted on WTKR TV 3 On April 21, 2009, WTKR TV 3 featured a story about electronic medical information and mentioned Sentara eCare® and the recent launch of the electronic medical record system at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Sentara Featured in Nursing Professionals Magazine
The Spring 2009 issue of
Nursing Professionals magazine, a new publication directed at students nurses, featured Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in its “2009 Top Hospitals to Work For.” The magazine surveyed 25,000 randomly selected hospital nurses nationwide to measure their job satisfaction. Questions ranged from nursing having a voice to flexible work arrangements.
