Sentara Advanced Vascular Treatment Center Opens at Port Warwick
The
Sentara Advanced Vascular Treatment Center debuted at
Sentara Port Warwick in Newport News on May 19, 2008, offering Hampton Roads residents state-of-the-art rapid assessment and treatment of venous and vascular disease in a convenient, patient-friendly, outpatient setting focused on quality care.
With an additional location on the Southside, both centers enable area patients to benefit from the latest technology and minimally invasive endovascular procedures.
Top Notch, Accessible Care According to Marc Glickman, MD, FACS, director of
Vascular Services for Sentara, “This expansion of outpatient vascular services to Sentara Port Warwick demonstrates our commitment to bringing the latest technology and treatment methods closer to where our patients live and work.”
A community open house held May 10 allowed residents to tour the new facility, undergo a free vein screening and attend educational lectures.

Physician Leaders Sentara’s vascular specialists form the cornerstone of the new facility. Members of
Sentara Medical Group, they are board-certified and fellowship-trained, as well as nationally and internationally recognized in minimally invasive treatment approaches, transplantation, surgical education and vascular research.
“This team of physicians is extremely talented,” said Dr. Glickman. “They are dedicated to the continuous improvement of treatment options and the delivery of quality patient care with the best clinical outcomes possible.”
Clinical Trials & Technology In addition, Sentara’s vascular specialists are committed to helping advance the field of vascular treatment by conducting clinical research trials in partnership with several major biotechnology companies. This research involves the use of advanced technologies for treating vascular disease and access to the newest, most innovative and effective procedures not yet available in other vascular centers in the country.
Diagnostic Testing
About one in 37 Americans suffer from peripheral vascular disease, a disease often caused by a narrowing of the vessels that carry blood to and from the leg and arm muscles. Diagnosis is critical, as people with the disease are six to seven times more likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke.
According to Megan Perry, senior vice president of business development, Sentara Healthcare, each Sentara center has a peripheral vascular lab, which serves as an extension of the physician’s office.
“The vascular labs use non-invasive technology to view a patient’s veins and arteries. These pain-free studies help identify blockages, clots and other flow disorders and help the vascular specialists determine the best treatment option possible,” Perry said.

Minimally Invasive Treatments In the past, most patients with severe peripheral vascular disease would have undergone a highly invasive bypass surgery. These surgeries required up to a 10-day hospital stay, general anesthesia and several weeks recovery time.
Now with minimally invasive procedures, patients have alternatives to surgery and can enjoy shorter recovery times and prolonged quality of life.
Vein Services For patients suffering from unsightly or painful varicose or spider veins, The Vein Center of Virginia can treat those using safe, effective techniques with dramatic results.
