SPY® Imaging System Introduced Sentara Heart Hospital and Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital have introduced a new technology to aid in bypass surgery — SPY® Intra-operative Imaging System. The technology is used before and after coronary bypass surgery in order to provide immediate confirmation of a successful surgery. The system has been used at Sentara Heart Hospital® since January of this year with excellent results.

MammoSite® Shortens Breast Radiation A new MammoSite® technique available at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and Sentara CarePlex Hospital places a small balloon catheter inside a lumpectomy cavity to deliver high-dose radiation directly to the area where cancer is most likely to reoccur. This form of targeted radiation delivered from inside the body – also called brachytherapy – helps minimize side effects and damage to surrounding organs. Learn more about

HeartMate II Approved by FDA as Bridge-to-Transplant Sentara Heart Hospital has been among 44 sites in the country conducting a trial with the Thoratec® HeartMate II ® Left Ventricular Assist System (LVAS) which has just been approved by the Federal Drug Administration as a bridge-to-transplantation. This is a significant development for the product and Sentara’s program, which is also studying the HeartMate II in another trial as possible Destination Therapy. This option offers very sick heart patients the opportunity for longer-term survival and higher quality of life as they await a heart transplant.
