Sentara Participation in 'Donate Life' Program Receives Widespread Coverage James Helton, safety and security team leader at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, was interviewed for news stories that aired on WVEC-TV13 and WTKR-TV3 on April 1, 2009. Helton, who is also a kidney recipient from a deceased donor in Kentucky, raised a "Donate Life" flag in front of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital on April 1 to mark the beginning of "Donate Life" month. The flag was flown daily in April and continues to fly for a week, each time a deceased donor offers organs for transplant. The April 6 issue of
Inside Business featured a news brief about the ceremony at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
On April 19, the Virginia Beach
Beacon featured a story about the flag raising ceremony and butterfly sculpture dedication that was held at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.
The Suffolk Sun and
Suffolk News Herald also included articles about the April 24 flag raising ceremony that was held at Sentara Obici Hospital.

The Virginia Gazette Features Former Hospital Patient Letter The March 28, 2009, edition of
The Virginia Gazette featured a letter from Thomas Fischel, a James City County resident and former Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center patient. The letter thanks Dr. Michael Lily for saving his life, along with “all of the staff from the ER, to the ICU, right through rehab… All of you should be proud of your place of work.”


Media Coverage of Sentara eCare® at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital
On March 27, 2009, WAVY-TV 10 aired a story about Sentara eCare® going live at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and the March 26, 2009, issue of
The Virginian-Pilot also featured an article about the conversion. Both stories highlighted how teams of hospital staff, physicians and information technology experts have worked diligently to bring the largest hospital in Sentara on the Sentara eCare Health Network®. Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, the fourth hospital in Sentara to implement Sentara eCare®, went live at one minute past midnight on March 28.

Daily Press Features Article on Project Care The March 22, 2009, issue of
The Daily Press featured an opinion article entitled “Until We Fix Failing Health-Care System, Project CARE Helps to Fill in the Gaps.” The article was submitted by Robert J. Wittman, who represents Virginia's 1st District in the House of Representatives. Project Care links people without insurance to a medical “home,” medicine and specialty services. The article recognizes Sentara Health Care, along with Sentara Medical Group and the Sentara Health Foundation for supporting Project Care, as well as helping to make a difference “in the lives of our friends and neighbors, who just happen to be uninsured.”
Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital Featured in Beacon
The March 22, 2009, issue of the Virginia Beach
Beacon featured a front page article entitled, “Emergency Room Redo Aids Patients and EMS Crews.” The article highlights how the Emergency Department at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital has grown from 28 beds to 40, most of which are now in private rooms. There is a larger, brighter waiting room, a user-friendly ambulance entrance and a new Emergency Medical Services room that facilitates quicker turnarounds for Emergency Medical Services crews.

The Daily Press online featured an article titled, “Local Firms Tie Bonuses to Performance.” Michael V. Taylor, senior vice president for Human Resources at Sentara, was interviewed for the article about the Performance Plus program at Sentara.
Sun Features Sentara Obici Hospital in Article The March 19, 2009, issue of the Suffolk
Sun featured an article titled, “Certified Manager Keeps Hospital Germs at Bay.” Gloria Worrell, certified manager of Environmental Services at Sentara Obici Hospital, was interviewed for the article. She stressed the importance of teaching staff proper cleaning procedures to ensure patient safety.
Virginian-Pilot Features Employee Wellness Article A March 15, 2009, article in
The Virginian-Pilot titled “Gain a Healthy Knowledge of Insurance Options,” was authored by John DeGruttola, senior vice president of marketing and sales at Optima Health. The article discussed individual health insurance and the different options that are available – short term and long term options. The article also provided tips for consumers to look for when comparing plans, as well as value added benefits that may save money when selecting health insurance.

Insurance & Financial Advisor featured an article titled, “Optima Health to Offer Information to Encourage Reduced Costs,” with an interview with John DeGruttola, senior vice president of marketing and sales at Optima Health. Sentara Norfolk General Hospital Mentioned in Pilot Online Article
A March 6, 2009, article in
The Virginian-Pilot, featured an article titled “Keep Your Eyes On the Road, Not The Cell Phone.” The article highlighted a research project by
Children’s Hospital of The Kings’s Daughters and
Eastern Virginia Medical School that was conducted at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. The study tested the effects of cell phone and MP3 player use on the driving abilities of teens ages 16 to 18. Researchers hope the study’s findings will lead to further legislation outlawing use of cell phones and MP3s for teens while driving.

The Virginia Gazette Features Letter from Former Hospital Patient In early March of 2009,
The Virginia Gazette featured a letter written by John Filchko, a resident of James City County and former patient at Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center. The letter compliments the hospital for its “very caring and professional hospital personnel.” Specifically mentioned in the letter were Dr. Terryl Times, the Emergency Department, Admitting Department, Environmental Services Department, and Sentara Home Health. The letter cites, “After retiring from the U.S. Army, I was employed in a hospital for 18 years and I know the difference between mediocre, good and excellent care; and I would rate Sentara as superior care.”

The Suffolk-News Herald featured an article titled, “Obici Staff Shows Its Creative Side.” The article focused on a program under the direction of the hospital’s Planetree Spirit of Worklife Committee that provided an opportunity for all hospital departments to design a special box to receive Valentine’s wishes.
