(L-R) Sentara CarePlex Hospital volunteers Carol Johnson and Betsy Bocklet
Sentara CarePlex Hospital Auxiliary recently purchased two golf carts for the   —
hospital to provide assistance to people from the hospital parking lot to the entrance of the hospital. The carts, named “Wilma and Fred,” are staffed by auxiliary volunteers who transport patients, visitors and employees from hospital parking lots to the hospital entrance, Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Take advantage of the Volunteer Shuttle Service the next time you visit Sentara CarePlex Hospital. The hospital volunteers will soon be knitting chemo caps for oncology patients and would greatly appreciate your donations of yarn. The Volunteer Office which is located on the first floor of the hospital will happily accept donations.

Sentara Bayside Hospital/Sentara Princess Anne Auxiliary held a board and general meeting in September to present 2009 – 2010 goals. The auxiliary is planning fundraisers to be held in September, October and November, including the annual Tree of Light program. The gift shop continues to do well. Auxiliary membership is continuing to grow, thanks to Volunteer Coordinator Caroline Rawls and Auxiliary Past-President Shirley Muldrrig.

 Alice Ward

—    Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital Auxiliary is gearing up for another full year of fundraising. On Sept. 8-9, the auxiliary presented the "Ultimate Linens" sale in the hospital lobby. On Oct. 22-23, the auxiliary will hold the popular “Footprints” shoe sale and on Dec. 1-2, the “In the Bag” purse sale will take place. All three events are open to the public.

The 2009 scholarship program awarded $20,000 to recipients who are entering schools to pursue a medical related education or to people who currently work in healthcare and are continuing education in the medical field.

Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital truly values the support and dedication of volunteers, like Alice Ward. Ward is a former human resources director for the U.S. government, who certainly enjoys interacting with people. That’s one reason she’s a natural in her position with the Volunteer Office. She assists the volunteer coordinator with a variety of tasks – she can be found tracking volunteer hours, delivering mail and performing other office duties.

The Auxiliary to Sentara Hospitals-Norfolk, Inc. is always looking for new energetic volunteers. To find out more about volunteer opportunities at Sentara Leigh Hospital, contact Joyce Abbey at (757) 261-6940 and at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, contact Robin Valure at (757) 388-3461.

The Volunteer Services departments at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and Sentara Leigh Hospital have been collecting used books and magazines that will be available for patient reading. If you would like to make a book donation, please drop off at the Volunteer Office at Sentara Leigh Hospital or Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

(L-R) Hospital volunteers Ann Cort, Marcia Snyder, Beverley Smith and Barbara Loulan contribute to the Patient Assistance Liaison Program.

Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center Auxiliary plays an integral    —
role in the Patient Assistance Liaison Program (PAL) by providing added care, comfort, and companionship to patients. The volunteers help orient patients and their families to The Patient and Visitor Guide and the GetWellNetwork, so patients know how to navigate the TV and take advantage of the information and support provided by the GetWellNetwork.

Volunteers also acquaint patients with room service procedures, help set up food trays for self-feeding, assure the patients’ comfort, and when requested, escort patients to the chapel, gift shop, and piano performances.

 Marty Bland

—   The hospital truly values volunteers like Marty Bland, who began volunteering at the hospital in 1982. For the past 28 years, she has provided assistance to patients, visitors and staff at the Information Desk and has been an integral member of the Pineapple Knitters Chemo Cap team. She also shares her talent with the hospital Family Maternity Unit by knitting newborn baby caps for babies born at the hospital.

The Auxiliary recently received the following letter from Dr. Layton H. Beverage, Gloucester High School principal. The letter states, “Thank you for the support you have given our graduating seniors. Your personal and financial commitment to these young college bound students will make a difference in the hard work that lies ahead in achieving their life’s ambitions. Your scholarship contribution…is greatly appreciated. Your…support benefits our students and community in many different ways. I am grateful for people such as you…for making a positive difference in our student’s lives.”

Sentara Obici Hospital Auxiliary is planning events and activities for 2009 -2010. Fifty-seven junior volunteers recently completed the summer junior volunteer program. The junior volunteers assisted in departments throughout the hospital and were required to work a minimum of a four-hour shift each week. Seventy-one teens applied for the program.
