Daily Press Features Article About Sentara Social Networking —
The Aug. 5, 2009, business section of the
Daily Press featured an article entitled, “They Tweet for Customers.” The article focused on social networking and included interviews with Amy Sandoval and Robin Crane of Sentara System Development. Both discussed Sentara social networking efforts, such as
Twitter and
Facebook, which are being used to publicize health screenings and events, as well as to educate through webcasts.
Optima Featured in Insurance & Financial Advisor The August 2009 issue of
Insurance & Financial Advisor, featured an article entitled, “Going Green Making 'Cents' for Mid-Atlantic Insurers, Agencies." The article highlighted Optima’s green efforts including, plans to deliver Evidence of Coverage and Certificates of Insurance documents online rather than in print. The move will reduce paper use by 90 percent this year, saving Optima $250,000.

Ken Krakaur Featured in August Health Journal
The August 2009 issue of the Health Journal featured an interview with Ken Krakaur, senior vice president of Sentara Peninsula region. Entitled, “Setting His Sights on New Horizons, “ the article included an interview with Krakaur as he spoke about his short-term goals for Sentara, his love of sailing and how he has found time to author two books. The July 12, 2009, Health and Sciences section of the Virginian-Pilot featured an article about statin drug use and consulting your doctor before making changes to medication doses and regimen, written by Carl Hartman, MD. Dr. Hartman is the medical director of Cardiac Services at Sentara Heart Hospital.
COVA Connect Pilot Project Featured on www.dailypress.com
The July 10, 2009, issue of the dailypress.com featured a main page story on Optima Health being awarded a multi-year contract beginning July 1, 2009, to operate a pilot project with the Commonwealth of Virginia that offers state employees in specific Hampton Roads zip codes targeted health, prevention and clinical care service programs aimed at developing a healthier state workforce. The July 6, 2009, issue of Modern Healthcare, featured an article entitled, “States’ fights,” as budgets go deeper into the red, states are targeting Medicaid and other health programs again, as prime targets for cuts. Rob Broerman, Sentara senior vice president and chief financial officer, who was interviewed for the article, commented on the cost cutting efforts that Sentara has put into place to prepare for state Medicaid cuts.

On July 5, 2009, the Portsmouth Currents featured an article about CyberKnife® robotic radiosurgery program at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. The article highlighted cancer patient Lawrence Bates, who received CyberKnife® treatments.

The article featured the four major lessons learned by Sentara. As an early adopter of the EMR strategy, Sentara offers four major lessons learned: (1) EMR implementation requires a poignant approach to change management; (2) flawed clinical and business workflows must be re-engineered; (3) the complexity and duration of an EMR rollout demand a sound implementation strategy; (4) the stimulus plan challenge to “play now or pay later” requires a strong business case.

Sentara and Carteret General Hospital Affiliation Receives Media Coverage
The June 24, 2009, editon of the Carteret County News-Times featured an article entitled, “Hospital Board OKs Affiliation with Sentara.” The article explained that the board of directors of Carteret General Hospital approved entering an affiliation agreement with Sentara to provide services aimed at improving the county hospital’s clinical performance and cost savings.
The Virginian-Pilot Features Summer Safety Article
The June 20, 2009, issue of The Virginian-Pilot featured an article entitled “Do It Yourself Dangers - Play It Safe on Summer Projects.” The article was written by Dr. Frank Counselman, past president of the medical staff for Sentara Hospitals-Norfolk and chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School. Dr. Counselman is a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. The article touched on the importance of safety when taking on do-it-yourself home projects.
