January 27, 2000-Hampton, Va.- Gold Medallist Frank Shorter, named one of the 15 "Most Significant Runners of the Century," brings his message of physical fitness to Sentara Hampton Health and Fitness Center.

The 50-year-old Shorter is one of the greatest distance runners in U.S. history. His gold medal at the 1972 Munich Olympic marathon was considered the catalyst for starting the running craze in the U.S. He was also the silver medallist at the 1976 Montreal Olympic marathon. Shorter will offer a free talk to the community at the Sentara Hampton Health and Fitness Center Thursday night, February 3rd at 7 p.m.

"We are very excited to have an athlete of Shorter's caliber visit the Fitness Center,” says Don Jones, director of the Sentara Hampton Health and Fitness Center. "When you think of baseball greats, two names come to mind, McGwire and Sosa. When you think of running, it's Shorter’s name that stands out. Shorter introduced the masses to the athleticism and grace of long distance running when he won the gold medal in the 1972 Olympics."

In addition to winning his Olympic gold and silver medals, Shorter's long list of athletic accomplishments includes winning the 1972 and '76 U.S. Olympic Trials at 10,000 meters, five time national champion in 10,000 meters, and a four time national champion in cross country. Shorter was the 1972 Sullivan Award winner at the Outstanding American Amateur Athlete and he has been inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame, the U.S. Track and Field Hall of Fame and the U.S. Distance Running Hall of Fame. He was recently named one of the most significant runners of the century by Runners World Magazine.

Shorter has also been the color commentator for the 1988, '92,'96 and upcoming 2000 Olympic games.

The Sentara Hampton Health and Fitness Center is one of the sponsors of the Pomoco Group Hampton Coliseum Road Race held in Hampton on Saturday February 5th where Shorter will also appear.

Sentara Hampton Health and Fitness Center is the Peninsula's premiere health and fitness center, offering a comprehensive fitness program including Body Pump. Boot Camp, an indoor/outdoor track, aerobics, an indoor pool and physical therapy.
