Sentara Medical Group Accounts Receivable Team
Chris Cousins, Jenna Harrison, Doris Prince, Sandra Pomeroy, Elise Spoto, Terry Trahan, David Wheeler, Ray Williams.
This team recognized a need to turnaround deteriorating accounts receivable. In February 1999, they implemented a radical reorganization of staff, supervisors and work processes. They deployed several key billing activities at the point of service in the physician practices, yet maintained centralized control of those functions where they could realize economies of scale. This team also implemented Internet based technologies to improve electronic claims submission and redesigned the patient statement.
The team reduced account receivable days by 43 percent and outstanding account receivables by over 56 percent, while credit balances were reduced by over $1 million. The team also reduced staffing expenses and increased the percentage of claims submitted electronically to 87 percent.
