Norfolk, VA - November 17, 2003 -William K. Butler, II, President and Chief Executive Officer of SunTrust Bank of Hampton Roads, has begun a three-year term of service as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sentara Healthcare. He succeeds former Chairman Donald Clark. Butler has served as Vice Chairman of the Sentara Board since 2001 and as chairman of its Medical Affairs Committee since 1998.

Butler, a resident of Virginia Beach, is active in the Hampton Roads community. He serves as President of the Alison J. and Ella W. Parsons Foundation, and as a board member of Hampton Roads Partnership, Hampton Roads Economic Development Alliance, Peninsula Alliance for Economic Development, the Virginia Marine Science Museum and Chrysler Museum. Butler holds a Master of Business Administration from American University and a Bachelor of Science degree from Syracuse University.

The Sentara Healthcare Board of Directors consists of 18 members who meet monthly to oversee all divisions of Sentara Healthcare. Board members are not compensated for their time or service.
Butler says his goals include building on Sentara's reputation as one of the country's leading health care companies, further leveraging technology as a means to improve health care quality and effectiveness and using disciplines developed in other industries to enhance patient safety and quality outcomes.
