Virginia Beach, VA - March 27, 2003 -
When it debuts on March 31, the Advanced Imaging Center at First Colonial will provide Hampton Roads physicians and patients with the most comprehensive and technologically advanced outpatient imaging capabilities, as well as basic radiology services, under one roof in the region.
Developed through a strategic alliance between Sentara Healthcare and Hampton Roads Radiology Associates, the Advanced Imaging Center at First Colonial offers the speed and precision of a 16-slice Computed Tomography (CT) scanner - a state-of-the-art imaging tool that's setting new benchmarks for the industry. The 16-slice CT scanner offers the ability to scan from head to pelvis in one six-second breath hold, as well as fewer motion artifacts, better reproduction and superior image quality which can enable more precise diagnosis of medical conditions at their earliest stages.
According to Danilo Espinola, M.D., president of Hampton Roads Radiology, who will provide professional services at the Center, the 16-slice scanner has impressive capabilities. "This scanner has the ability to improve image quality, patient throughput and comfort with shorter imaging times," Dr. Espinola noted. "It will make available to the medical community and the public a new series of studies not previously available here."
The Center will also provide patients and referring physicians with a new level of customer service and convenience. While the Center is primarily designed to receive patients through physician referrals, self-referred CT screening requests from the general public will also be welcome.
In an effort to improve customer service to referring physicians, the Advanced Imaging Center at First Colonial will offer same-day scheduling and results reporting, desktop access to test results using designated software and high-speed Internet, soft and hard copy images, sub-specialist interpretations and the opportunity to speak directly with at any time.
Patients will also benefit from a focus on customer service, beginning with ample free parking, an interview to help staff better understand their needs and the opportunity to view a video outlining each procedure. An innovative patient lounge will feature an ExploreHealth with Sentara(r) Cyber Center, providing online access to health information, portals for personal laptop use, complimentary flavored coffees, and a library with health-related materials. The Center will also loan patients a pager, and supply discount coupons to area merchants and restaurants they may opt to visit prior to being summoned for their appointment.
In addition, advanced MRI technology is available for analysis of soft tissue, providing speed, precision and comfort. This technology scores high marks with patients prone to claustrophobia, and its high weight tolerance accommodates larger patients. Equally important, the advanced capabilities offer superior resolution. The advanced MRI is valuable for identifying and locating: brain tumors, strokes and disorders of the nervous system; tissue abnormalities in people with eye or inner ear disease; blockages of blood vessels; infections, injuries and disorders of bones and joints; tumors and chronic disorders in the lungs, liver, pancreas, kidney and spleen and breast cancer and problems of the male and female reproductive systems and bladder.
"By combining the latest screening technology available today with an enhanced focus on customer service, the Advanced Imaging Center will no doubt set a new standard for patient care and convenience in the region," said Kurt Hofelich, Advanced Imaging Center project manager for Sentara. "Rapid image access and subspeciality interpretation by physicians will go a long way toward enhancing the patient's quality of care in imaging." Procedures available at the facility include:
Peripheral arteriography, allowing non-invasive, more comfortable screening and early intervention.
Visceral angiography with improved accuracy to serve as a road map for therapeutic intervention.
Non-invasive evaluation of coronary arteries.
A physician-driven, focused screening program with CT Colonography, screening for lung cancer, and coronary artery calcium scoring. Overview:
