Norfolk, Virginia - April 16, 2003 - For the past six years, Modern Healthcare magazine has published a fact-based study highlighting the top 100 integrated health care networks (IHN) in the nation. Without fail, Sentara Healthcare has ranked in the top 10 of this list, remaining consistently in the No.1 position for the East Coast and again maintaining the No. 2 spot nationally.
"Being ranked among the nation's most integrated health care networks for all six years of the survey is a testament to our unwavering commitment to providing quality care to our patients," said Sentara Healthcare Chief Executive Officer David L. Bernd.
Verispan, a Pennsylvania-based health care information company, conducts the annual study. Verispan's IHN 100 (formerly SMG IHN 100) is the nation's premier rating system, evaluating IHNs on their financial and clinical performance and degree of integration. According to Modern Healthcare, IHN 100 systems "boast better financial performance and stronger clinical results than the other 472 regional integrated networks that were part of the survey." For example, their average lengths of stay are shorter, and their average profit margins are better.
Verispan conducted a rigorous examination of 572 health systems across the nation before filtering out the top 100. Systems selected for the prestigious list exhibit high degrees of success based on eight factors: outpatient utilization, integrated technology, hospital utilization, financial stability, services and access, contract capabilities, physicians, and integration. Sentara has ranked among the nation's top two IHNs for the last three years, capturing the top spot in 2001 and taking the number two spot in both 2002 and 2003.
"A big part of our continuing success is the consistency with which we operate each Sentara facility," said Bernd. "When people enter our physicians' offices and hospitals, we want them to receive quality services at every turn. Being honored nationally for such standards inspires us to continue building a strong tradition of top-notch medical care in the community."
Results of the 2003 Verispan IHN 100 survey appeared in the March 3 edition of Modern Healthcare magazine and the March edition of Healthcare Financial Management magazine.
