Norfolk, VA - August 6th, 2003 - Two of the region's top cancer service providers, Sentara Healthcare and Virginia Oncology Associates (VOA), have formed a partnership to create a new vision for cancer care in the region.
Sentara, the premier hospital and health care services provider in Hampton Roads, and VOA, an innovative, independent oncology group, will work together to create integrated cancer treatment centers in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Newport News and York County.
"We are delighted to have established a partnership with a quality practice like Virginia Oncology Associates," said Mark Gavens, Sentara Vice President for System Services. "The combined strengths of our systems will work to the benefit of our patients."
These oncology centers are planned for the Princess Anne Commons area of Virginia Beach, the Lake Wright Executive Center in Norfolk, the Port Warwick Medical Arts complex in Newport News, and the new Williamsburg Regional Medical Center campus in York County. These centers will offer cancer patients unprecedented access to the full spectrum of cancer services from diagnosis to multi-disciplinary treatments and support services in a patient-friendly atmosphere.
This partnership between Sentara and Virginia Oncology Associates will also extend to Sentara's existing hospital-based programs at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, Sentara CarePlex Hospital in Hampton, and the planned Williamsburg Regional Medical Center in York County.
"This partnership represents a new era of cooperation and collaboration between physicians and Sentara," Gavens added, "which will only serve to improve patient care and outcomes."
Sentara Healthcare, a premier not-for-profit health care provider in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina, is comprised of 6 acute care hospitals, a hospital for extended recovery, 2 outpatient care campuses, 7 nursing centers, 3 assisted living centers, and 25 primary care practices.
Sentara also offers a full range of health coverage plans, home health and hospice services, physical therapy and rehabilitation services, mobile diagnostic vans, and air and ground medical transport services, including Nightingale-the region's only air ambulance service. Sentara was ranked the number one integrated health care network in the United States in 2001 by Modern Healthcare magazine and is the only health care system in the nation to be named in the top 10 for six consecutive years.
Virginia Oncology Associates has been providing medical oncology and gynecological oncology services at 15 offices in the region for 25 years.
