May 9, 2003-Williamsburg, Va.- The board of Sentara Williamsburg Community Hospital announces the name of the new hospital that will eventually replace Sentara Williamsburg Community Hospital; Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center. Construction on the new hospital and medical campus, to be located on Mooretown Road in York County, will begin next year. The new facility is scheduled to open in 2006.
The Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center name reflects the expansive geographic area the facility will serve including growing areas such as New Kent and York Counties. The new name also reflects the growing health care needs in the greater Williamsburg area, expanded medical capabilities planned for the new facility and future state-of-the-art technology enhancements for patient care.
"Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center better showcases the health care programs and services it will provide," says Marc Sharp, SWCH Board Chairman. "The new hospital also has the potential for future growth as we continue to evolve and expand to meet the ever-changing health care needs of the greater Williamsburg area."
The medical campus will also allow numerous outpatient and diagnostic services currently located in a variety of locations across the area to be consolidated in one convenient location for residents and will offer new space for future programs and medical offices. This campus is also conveniently located just off I-64 at exit 234 providing for better access to medical care for residents who not only live in Williamsburg but also those who live outside the city limits and surrounding residential areas.
"The staff and leadership at Sentara Williamsburg Community Hospital have defined the hospital by their commitment to customer service and personalized patient care. This commitment will provide the foundation for the new hospital and ensure the continued health and well being of the community," notes Les Donahue, administrator of Sentara Williamsburg Community Hospital.
"Our dedicated employees will create the culture of this regional medical center and make it a special place for residents to receive medical care and for physicians to deliver it," he said.
The focus upon state-of-the-art technology and medical excellence in the new medical center is being combined with the Planetree philosophy of patient-centered care in order to bring about an entirely new health care experience for patients, visitors and staff.
"Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center will bring together compassionate, high quality medical care; committed employees; and pleasing facility aesthetics to create a special place with a truly healing environment," Donahue added.
Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center will be licensed for 139 beds including an expanded Emergency Center. The facility will sit on a beautifully landscaped 84-acre campus.
