Norfolk, Virginia – April 26, 2004 — Every picture tells a story and one patient’s could have had a very different ending. Suffering from what seemed like simple shortness of breath, every minute counted for Lisa’s diagnosis and treatment. Within one hour of the CT scan, her physician was notified and immediately began treatment of the life-threatening blood clot in her lungs.
"Prompt diagnosis allowed immediate and successful treatment of this very serious condition," noted radiologist Jeffrey D. McTavish, M.D. "It would not have been possible without this technology in place," he added.
When Advanced Imaging Center – Leigh debuts April 26, not only will it have advanced outpatient imaging capabilities, it will feature image sharing and voice recognition software—making same-day imaging results a reality across Hampton Roads.
Sentara is the first health care system in the region to make it possible for images to be shared immediately and doctors’ dictations to be electronically transcribed within seconds. Using this technology, doctors are able to initiate treatment sooner for life-threatening illnesses.
The Advanced Imaging Center – Leigh, developed through a strategic alliance between Sentara Healthcare and Medical Center Radiologist, is a one-stop, comprehensive outpatient imaging center outfitted with the speed and precision of a 16-slice Computed Tomography (CT) scanner — a state-of-the-art imaging tool that’s setting new benchmarks for the industry. The 16-slice CT scanner scans head to pelvis in one six-second breath hold with better reproduction and superior image quality, which can enable more precise diagnosis of medical conditions at their earliest stages.
According to Theodore A. Dorsay, M.D., medical director at Advanced Imaging Center- Leigh who will provide professional services at the center, the 16-slice scanner has impressive capabilities. "Patients will notice dramatically shorter imaging times," Dr. Dorsay said. "In most cases actual imaging is performed in matter of seconds while we acquire images of superior resolution," he added.
The center will also provide patients and referring physicians with a new level of customer service and convenience. While the center is primarily designed to receive patients through physician referrals, focused body CT screening services are also offered to the public.
To improve customer service to referring physicians, the center will offer same-day scheduling and results reporting, desktop access to test results using designated software and high-speed Internet, CD and hard copy film images, sub-specialist interpretations and the opportunity to speak directly with a radiologist at any time.
"We are offering patients and physicians a whole new level of convenience," said Dr. Dorsay.
Patients will benefit from the customer service focus, beginning with ample free parking and an opportunity for patients to view a video outlining their procedure. An innovative patient lounge will feature an ExploreHealth with Sentara® Cyber Center, providing online access to health information, complimentary flavored coffees, and a library with health-related materials.
In addition to state-of-the-art CT scanning at the center, advanced MRI technology will decrease imaging times with new equipment that scores higher marks with patients prone to claustrophobia and has a high weight tolerance to enhance patient comfort.
