The Oral Health Improvement Coalition of South Hampton Roads, a cooperative committed to improving oral health in Hampton Roads, plans to address dental health-one of the area's most serious gaps in health care-by recruiting nearly 130 local dentists this year to work in the region's free dental health clinics.

-- Sentara's New Medical Office Building Officially Opens 
Sentara's latest medical office building-Greenbrier HealthPlex opened June 29th. Greenbrier HealthPlex is the first facility to open on Sentara's 14-acre comprehensive medical campus.

-  Sentara Pancreas Transplant Proposal Wins Preliminary Approval
Sentara Norfolk General Hospital won unanimous approval from the Eastern Virginia Health Systems Agency Board of Directors to perform pancreas transplants. The procedure would be available for Type 1 diabetics with end-stage renal disease, or kidney failure.

Solucient, a national hospital survey group, has named Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital to its first list of 100 Top Hospitals Performance Improvement Leaders. Only two hospitals in Virginia made the list.

-- Sentara Offers Newest Drug-eluting Stent, Only the 2nd FDA Approved Stent Available
In early March the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the next generation drug-eluting stent based on findings from the TAXUS IV study. Sentara is offering the latest stent to patients- Boston Scientific's TAXUS(tm) Express2(tm).

-- Results of a Nationwide Cardiology Trial Released, Sentara Norfolk General Hospital a Pilot Site for Landmark Study
The results of one of the most anticipated clinical trials in cardiology was released March 8, 2004, by the American College of Cardiology (ACC). Sentara Norfolk General Hospital was selected as one of the pilot sites for the progressive National Institutes of Health study called, SCD-HeFT (Sudden Cardiac Death in Heart Failure Trial).

-- Sentara Granted Final Site Plan Approval, Construction on new Medical Center set to begin next month
Sentara received word of York County's final approval on the site plan for the new Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center, which will be located on Sentara's 84-acre Mooretown Road campus in Lightfoot. With the site plan approved, Sentara plans to break ground on the new facility in April.
