Williamsburg, VA – April 20, 2004 – Construction is set to begin on Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center. The Honorable Timothy Kaine, Lt. Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, will join Sentara officials as they break ground on the new 339,000 square foot Medical Center.
The groundbreaking ceremony will be held on Thursday, April 22nd at 11:00 am. The Lt. Governor will also offer remarks during the ceremony.
Combining advanced technology with a patient-center (Planetree) approach to health care service delivery, Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center will improve access to care and offer a new standard of medical excellence to area residents and visitors. Local, regional and state leaders are expected to come together to celebrate the event.
"The construction of Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center will provide the growing Williamsburg community with easy access to the highest quality services in a state-of-the-art facility with the ability to grow as the community’s healthcare needs expand," said Robert Graves, Sentara Williamsburg Community Hospital Administrator. "It’s been the hallmark of this institution to improve the health of the community and to be a resource to those who need us."
Scheduled to open in the summer of 2006, Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center is licensed for 139 all private rooms. Not only will the new hospital provide better access, flow, privacy and availability of services, it also provides a major opportunity to add to the high level of care already provided by local medical professionals and the specialists who staff the hospital.
"The staff of our hospital is dedicated to providing easily accessible and quality medical care to our community," said Dr. James Lesnick, Chief of the Medical Staff. "This new hospital will be a milestone to that end."
The expanded Emergency Department will have 30 private patient rooms and a 10-bed observation unit. The Surgery Department will feature 5 operating rooms, in addition to the 3 operating rooms already located at the Outpatient Care Center, and 22 private prep and recovery rooms dedicated to patients undergoing surgical procedures.
"Williamsburg Community Hospital has been a part of the community for more than 40 years," said Marc Sharp, Chairman of the Sentara Williamsburg Community Hospital Board. " "With the Sentara merger in 2002, Williamsburg area communities had increased access to a greater depth and breadth of services. The medical capabilities will be further enhanced by this state-of-the-art facility."
Amenities available at the new Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center will be supported by fully integrated information systems. Other features at the new hospital include a filmless, all-digital radiology department; expanded cardiac and vascular services, with a full time, dedicated cardiac cath lab and a separate dedicated special procedures room for interventional radiology and vascular procedures; a critical care and progressive care unit; and a wide variety of outpatient services.
The Family Maternity Center will expand to 13 luxurious patient rooms where mother and baby will remain for their entire hospital stay – from labor through discharge, in addition to 4 postpartum beds for surgery patients. The new medical center will remain the only facility in the region to offer this patient-centered, family-friendly style of maternity services.
"Health care service is not only essential to improving the health of a community; it is an economic driver that brings vitality to the entire region," said the Honorable Timothy Kaine. "This new facility is a wonderful sign that Sentara is investing in the health of this region."
