Optima Health Plan has received its first ‘A’ rating from Weiss Ratings, Inc., one of the most respected health plan ratings agencies in the nation. The A- rating places Optima Healthä on the Weiss Recommended List of companies, an elite group of 98 HMOs representing the top 19% of health plans.
“This is a breakthrough,” says Michael M. Dudley, President of Optima Health. “In three years of quarterly measures, we’ve steadily improved Optima’s Weiss ratings from a ‘C’ to the current A-.” Dudley adds, “This rating means consumers choosing Optima can rest assured we’ll be there when they need us.” Optima Health was the only HMO in Virginia to receive an ‘A’ rating during this survey.
The Weiss agency advises consumers in its Consumer Safety Update. In this latest report Weiss says, “ we believe you can safely include Optima Health Plan among the companies you consider.”
Weiss considers seven fiscal factors in ranking a health plan, including the plan’s ability to predict the course of claims, its ability to absorb a spike in claims, the soundness of its investment strategy and its profitability.
“We’re controlling costs in part by helping our members stay healthy,” Michael Dudley continues, “and we’re growing our member base, all of which contribute to a healthy Weiss rating.” Optima Health operates a vigorous disease management and member education program, as well as an in-house pharmacy management program, which results in a formulary of the safest, most effective medications at the lowest overall cost.
“Optima Health is committed to serving its members,” concludes Michael Dudley, “and we’re delighted that a respected judge of our business can tell them we’re a sound choice.”
