Norfolk, VA – March 9, 2004 – Two Sentara Healthcare executives have been promoted to top leadership roles within the organization by Sentara’s board of directors. Rodney F. Hochman, M.D. has been appointed from Senior Vice President to Executive Vice President, and Robert A. Broermann has been promoted from Corporate Vice President to Senior Vice President.

"The extraordinary talent and leadership of these two employees are simply unmatched. Their passion and vision have brought about some of the most successful healthcare initiatives in this community. I applaud and celebrate their success," said David L. Bernd, Sentara Healthcare’s Chief Executive Officer.

Hochman has provided valuable clinical leadership as Sentara’s Chief Medical Officer, a position he has held for more than six years. In 2002 he was also appointed administrator of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital; he will continue to serve in both capacities.

Prior to joining Sentara, he served in leadership roles with a number of health systems including Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati and Guthrie Healthcare System in Sayre, Pennsylvania. He also served on the faculty of the University of Cincinnati Medical School and clinical campus of State University of New York at Syracuse.

Hochman completed his medical training at Boston University and Fellowship training in rheumatology at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Rheumatology. He serves on the board of directors of Sentara Health Management, Sentara Medical Group, Sentara Williamsburg Community Hospital, and the Comprehensive Health Investment Project of Virginia.

Broermann is Sentara’s Chief Financial Officer. During his 12-year tenure with the organization, he has served in various roles of increasing responsibility. He has been key to strategic decisions of the system since 1998 when Sentara merged with Tidewater Health Care, where he served as chief financial officer. Prior to joining Tidewater Health Care, Broermann was a senior audit manager with Coopers & Lybrand.

Broermann holds a B.S. degree in accounting and an M.B.A degree from Old Dominion University. He is a member of the American Society of CPAs, Virginia Society of CPAs, and Fellow of the Healthcare Financial Management Association.
