March 22, 2004-Williamsburg, Va.- This week Sentara received word of York County’s final approval on the site plan for the new Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center, which will be located on Sentara’s 84-acre Mooretown Road campus in Lightfoot. With the site plan approved, Sentara plans to break ground on the new facility in April.
Plans for the Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center involve construction of a 5-story, 339,000 square foot facility adjoining the existing Outpatient Care Center via an enclosed corridor. In addition to the $23.4 million already invested in the Outpatient Care Center, Sentara will spend an additional $96 million to construct this state-of-the-art, all-digital facility featuring patient-centered care with a unique health care experience. Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center is scheduled to open in the Summer of 2006 with 139 all private rooms. Sentara officials unveiled the final architectural designs of the new campus during a press briefing today.
"Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center will offer expanded clinical services, featuring some of the most advanced medical technology and skill in the region," said Robert Graves, administrator of Sentara Williamsburg Community Hospital. "This facility is designed to provide high quality patient care with an emphasis on safety and superior outcomes. It will set a new standard of excellence in medical capabilities and patient experience."
The new facility will be built to support a sophisticated technology backbone that will better facilitate the digital transfer of high resolution images within and outside the facility; and eICU , an advanced continuous monitoring system for intensive care patients by intensivists who work from a remote eICU location when primary care physicians are not at the patient’s bedside. In addition to supporting current technologies, the facility will be equipped to better accommodate future technology growth.
The expanded Emergency Department will have 30 private patient rooms and a 10-bed observation unit. The state-of-the-art, digital facility will house 5 operating rooms, in addition to the 3 operating rooms already located at the Outpatient Care Center, and 22 private prep and recovery rooms dedicated to patients undergoing surgical procedures. The Family Maternity Center will expand to 13 labor, delivery, recovery, postpartum beds, in addition 4 postpartum beds, remaining the only facility in the region to offer this patient centered, family-friendly style of maternity services.
Numerous outpatient and diagnostic services currently located in a variety of locations across the area will be consolidated in one convenient location for residents and will offer new space for future programs and medical offices. Conveniently located just off I-64 at exit 234, the campus provides easier access to medical care for residents who not only live in Williamsburg but also those who live outside the city limits and surrounding residential areas.
The focus upon superior technology and medical excellence in the new medical center is being combined with the Planetree philosophy of patient-centered care in order to bring about an entirely new health care experience for patients, visitors and staff. "We are keenly aware that recovery involves much more than medicine," said Graves. "We are designing a progressive, holistic approach to care."
