Norfolk, VA – January 10, 2004 –Named the region’s first Sentara Heart Partner, the YMCA of South Hampton Roads joins Sentara Healthcare in its fight against heart disease—the nation’s and Virginia’s leading killer. Beginning in January, 13 YMCA of South Hampton Roads locations, in collaboration with Sentara, are launching a 12-week program emphasizing lifestyle changes that promote the prevention of heart disease.

"Sentara’s partnership with the YMCA is the perfect marriage of medical knowledge with the area’s fitness leader. We couldn’t be more pleased to continue working with the YMCA to help prevent heart disease in the community," said Terrina Thomas, Manager of Sentara’s Community Health and Prevention Division.

Building on their longstanding relationship and successful implementation of other wellness programs across the region, Sentara and the YMCA of South Hampton Roads—through this partnership of distinction—pledge to further heart health in southeastern Virginia to northeastern North Carolina together.

"The enthusiasm among our fitness staff is contagious. Staff and members are excited about this collaboration. The education provided by Sentara, in conjunction with the YMCA’s instruction and one-on-one support system, will assist people in making healthy lifestyle changes," said Barbara Moore, YMCA’s Health & Wellness Representative.

Free to members of YMCA, the 12-Week Challenge couples fitness with monthly health seminars including information about the importance of exercise, nutrition, smoking cessation, and cardiovascular health. During the program, a personal fitness coach also works directly with members to discuss weights and cardiovascular equipment, their current health status, and eating habits.
