Virginia Beach, VA - November 14, 2005 - Patients in Virginia Beach suffering a heart attack can now get immediate, advanced heart attack treatment at Sentara Bayside Hospitals new combined catheterization, angiography, and vascular (CAV) laboratory.
The new laboratory is staffed by board-certified cardiologists who are able to perform life-saving heart catheterizations known as primary angioplasties to open blocked arteries. Previously, patients with serious, life-threatening blockages would have automatically been transferred to another area hospital.
Sentara Bayside Hospital has the full capacity to take care of acute heart attack patients, said Cardiologist Gunadhar Panigrahi, M.D.
"We now have the equipment, onsite expertise, and capacity to perform heart catheterizations and coronary interventions (PTCA-Stent). Patients experiencing heart attacksknown as acute myocardial infractionsneed immediate heart treatment, and now theyll be able to receive this treatment right here," he said.
The new CAV laboratory, staffed with technicians and nurses proficient in diseases affecting both the heart and blood vessels, offers patients a new level of care and convenience. Additional space in the area improves procedure times and provides patients increased privacy before and after procedures. Permanently located on the second floor of the Hospital near the OB Unit, the lab is expected to serve approximately 400-500 patients per year who have clogged arteries, undiagnosed heart and circulation issues, and kidney or other blockages, among other concerns.
"It's a great asset for this community," said Cardiologist Anilkumar R. Patel, M.D. "The main advantage I see is time. Patients are no longer transferred to another facility. We have the ability to treat them right here. The lab is very spacious and conveniently located, and its more accessible to ICU and Telemetry."
The lab is also staffed by vascular surgeons who address peripheral vascular disease a disease of the blood vessels which interferes with blood flow primarily in arteries that lead to the kidneys, stomach, arms, legs, and feet. The catheterization, angiography, and vascular laboratory is staffed by specially trained technicians and nurses proficient in heart and vascular diseases.
This new cardiovasular and endovascular suite adds significantly to the care of patients in the Bayside area by providing state-of-the-art, minimally invasive procedures for patients with peripheral vascular disease, said Vascular Surgeon Marc Glickman, M.D.
Sentara Bayside Hospital is a 158-bed acute care facility specializing in outpatient diagnostic and surgical services. The facility also features a peripheral vascular lab and a breast cancer center. The hospital is home to a contemporary care environment for general medical/surgical and ambulatory services and offers eICU, a highly advanced electronic monitoring system for its intensive care patients and a hospitalist program. The hospital features a 44,000 square-foot wing that houses all outpatient services, an expanded emergency room, additional surgical suites, a critical care unit, and the four-bed Sleep Disorders Center.
