Sentara Healthcare and Velocity Sports Performance have joined forces to help support the health, safety and success of student athletes. As a community service, the two organizations are offering area high schools the National Athletic Testing Program (NATP) to assist in the development of athletic performance and reduce the risk of injury.
Professional trainers from Sentara and Velocity will conduct test sessions twice a year. Focal points of the test include upper body power, agility, lower body power, body composition, and acceleration/speed. Progress will be monitored each season to evaluate flexibility and injury concerns with the long-term goal of preventing injuries. Designed after collegiate and professional testing protocols, the NATP also enables athletes and coaches to compare local scores with those of athletes and schools nationwide.
"Through the NATP, young people establish a performance baseline, set goals, and fine-tune skills over time. They see themselves getting stronger, faster and more agile each season. The confidence boost is immeasurable," said John M. Cunningham, president of Velocity Sports Performance.
"Hampton Roads is clearly a community in which a healthy approach to school athletics is a top priority. Our goal in implementing the NATP is to maximize every healthy benefit possible for student athletes," said Kurt Hofelich, vice president of Sentara Rehabilitation Network and Imaging Services.
